New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to convene a high-level meeting with senior Union ministers and officials on Wednesday evening to assess the evolving situation stemming from the West Asia conflict and its implications for India’s energy, food, and fuel security.
Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that the review meeting was scheduled following the Prime Minister’s return from Assam, where he was engaged in campaigning for the ongoing assembly elections.
The crucial deliberations are expected to involve key figures from the Union cabinet, including Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Bharatiya Janata Party National President J.P. Nadda, Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi, Steel and Mines Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu, and Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri. National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Prime Minister’s Principal Secretaries P.K. Mishra and Shaktikanta Das, and Cabinet Secretary T.V. Somanathan are also slated to participate.
This review follows a similar meeting held on March 22, where the Prime Minister and his cabinet reviewed the West Asia conflict’s impact and conducted a detailed assessment of the availability of essential commodities for the public. During that session, Prime Minister Modi had emphasized that the conflict was a dynamic situation affecting the global community and stressed the importance of safeguarding citizens from its repercussions. He had directed all government agencies to collaborate to minimize any inconvenience to the populace.
In his monthly radio address, ‘Mann Ki Baat’, last Sunday, Prime Minister Modi had described the ongoing conflict in West Asia as “challenging” and urged national unity to navigate the difficulties. He cautioned against politicizing the crisis, emphasizing that such actions were detrimental to the country and appealed to citizens to refrain from spreading rumors, which he noted were causing significant harm.
The Prime Minister had also addressed the global energy crisis on March 12, stating that the West Asia conflict posed a critical test for national character, requiring a response characterized by peace, patience, and increased public awareness. He had highlighted the government’s continuous efforts to address disruptions in international supply chains and find solutions to overcome these challenges.
The West Asia conflict, which escalated on February 28 following attacks by the U.S. and Israel on Iran, has led to retaliatory actions by Iran against Israel and several of its Gulf neighbours. This geopolitical tension has significantly impacted the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping route responsible for transporting approximately 20 percent of the world’s energy supply. Iran’s restrictions on maritime traffic through the strait have caused severe disruptions in energy supplies to numerous countries, including India.
Since the onset of the conflict, Prime Minister Modi has engaged in diplomatic discussions with leaders from Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan, France, the Netherlands, Malaysia, Israel, and Iran. He also held a conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump on March 24, exchanging views on the West Asia situation. These diplomatic engagements underscore India’s proactive approach to managing the fallout of regional conflicts and ensuring national interests are protected.
