In a notable departure from societal norms, a family in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, orchestrated a jubilant celebration following the granting of their daughter’s divorce. The family marked the occasion with drumming, garlands, and sweets, aiming to dismantle the stigma often associated with divorce.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the retired judge Gyanendra Kumar Sharma welcomed his daughter, Pranita Vashistha, home after a family court finalized her divorce on Saturday. The celebration was intended to convey a strong message against societal judgment and to support Pranita’s new beginning.
Pranita had married an Army Major from Shahjahanpur on December 19, 2018. However, according to her legal counsels, Rajeev Giri and Naseeb Saifi, the marriage encountered significant difficulties, with allegations of ongoing mental, physical, and emotional distress at her matrimonial home. Despite the birth of a son, the marital situation did not improve, leading Pranita to seek a divorce through the Meerut family court. Principal Judge Shaktiputra Tomar granted the divorce on Saturday.
Following the court’s decision, Pranita’s family transformed the moment into a celebration of a “new beginning.” As Pranita exited the court premises, relatives engaged in dancing to the rhythm of drums, escorting her home in a festive procession. Upon her arrival, Dr. Sharma, her father, greeted her with garlands and distributed sweets to well-wishers. Family members wore black T-shirts prominently displaying the slogan “I Love My Daughter,” underscoring their unwavering support.
Dr. Sharma articulated his perspective to PTI, stating, “If my daughter is not happy in marriage, it is my duty to bring her out of that environment. We did not seek alimony or anything else. I just brought my daughter back.” He emphasized that daughters should not be treated as possessions and that their happiness and dignity should supersede societal expectations. This stance highlights a growing sentiment among some families to prioritize individual well-being over traditional social pressures.
Pranita, who holds a postgraduate degree in Psychology, serves as the finance director at Pranav Vashistha Judicial Academy in Tejgarhi. She is the only child of her parents, as her brother, Pranav Vashistha, tragically died in an accident in Chandigarh in 2022. Recounting her experiences, Pranita described becoming mentally fragile during her marriage but credited her family’s steadfast support for aiding her in rebuilding her life. She encouraged women facing similar adversities not to remain silent, advising them to “Stand up for yourself. Become strong, educate yourself and be independent before thinking about marriage.” Her statement advocates for self-reliance and personal empowerment as foundations before entering into matrimony.
The family’s unconventional response to the divorce has drawn attention within the local community. Many residents believe that this gesture could contribute to challenging deeply entrenched social taboos surrounding divorce in India.
