Authorities in Delhi have significantly bolstered security measures at the Indira Gandhi International Airport, railway stations, and metro facilities in response to recent arrests linked to an alleged espionage network. The Delhi Police have commenced a comprehensive audit of CCTV systems across these vital transportation nodes to ensure no unauthorized or ‘spy’ cameras are in place.

CCTV Audit Underway at Sensitive Locations

The security enhancement initiative, which has been ongoing for approximately two weeks, involves a thorough inspection of all surveillance equipment within and around railway stations, the Delhi Metro network, and the IGI Airport. This proactive measure is being conducted in collaboration with the Railway Ministry, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, and the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and Railway Protection Force (RPF), who manage internal security at these locations.

According to an official familiar with the Delhi Police’s operations, the audit aims to detect and neutralize any hidden surveillance devices that could compromise national security. The heightened scrutiny follows the apprehension of a substantial number of individuals by the Ghaziabad Police, who are alleged to have been involved in filming sensitive military installations, railway stations, and other critical infrastructure across the country. These individuals are accused of transmitting captured photographs, videos, and GPS coordinates to foreign handlers.

Espionage Network Uncovered

The recent arrests have shed light on a sophisticated espionage network that allegedly targeted strategic locations. In March, the Ghaziabad Police arrested six individuals, including a woman, for activities deemed detrimental to national interests, specifically for filming railway stations and security force installations for foreign handlers. Subsequent arrests were made as the investigation progressed, uncovering a wider network.

The repercussions of these arrests were felt immediately in areas surrounding Delhi. Following interrogations of the accused in the Ghaziabad espionage case, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) discovered a clandestine CCTV camera concealed along a railway track near Sonipat Railway Station. Another similar camera was found near Delhi Cantonment Railway Station, along the route towards Naraina and Sonipat, indicating a coordinated effort to gather intelligence through compromised infrastructure.

Broader Security Concerns and Modus Operandi

Reports suggest that the arrested individuals operated through digital platforms, utilizing encrypted messaging applications and social media to maintain contact with their overseas handlers. Preliminary investigations indicate that minors were allegedly exploited to gain access to sensitive or restricted areas without raising suspicion, a tactic designed to circumvent security protocols. The operation was reportedly initiated following specific intelligence inputs, leading to surveillance operations and coordinated raids across various locations in Delhi.

The seized electronic devices, including mobile phones and storage media, are currently undergoing forensic examination to map the network’s reach and identify further connections. Authorities are investigating whether the accused were fully aware of the gravity of their actions or were manipulated through financial incentives. Strict legal action is promised against those found culpable, with cases involving minors to be handled under the Juvenile Justice Act.

The incident has amplified concerns regarding the misuse of technology for espionage and the growing vulnerability of younger individuals to such clandestine activities. Law enforcement agencies have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious attempts to gather or disseminate information pertaining to sensitive installations. The ongoing investigation seeks to dismantle the entire network and prevent future breaches of national security.
