Residents living in villages surrounding the newly inaugurated Noida International Airport in Jewar are facing significant safety challenges when attempting to access public transportation. Many are compelled to navigate dangerous routes, including perilous climbs, to reach bus stops along the Yamuna Expressway, a situation exacerbated by the absence of adequate shuttle services and local connectivity. This predicament highlights a critical gap in the public transportation infrastructure designed to serve the area around one of India’s most ambitious airport projects.
Information available with The Chenab Times indicates that villagers, such as those in Jewar tehsil, are forced to take life-threatening risks daily to board buses. This situation persists despite the presence of strict pedestrian restrictions and a designated speed limit on the Yamuna Expressway. The core of the problem, according to former Additional Transport Commissioner (Road Safety) P.S. Satyarthi, lies in the fundamental lack of shuttle bus services connecting these villages to their respective tehsil and district headquarters. The urgency for improved connectivity has been underscored by various reports, with the Noida International Airport aiming to serve millions of passengers in its initial operational year. However, achieving this target is contingent upon rapid improvements in transportation links, as immediate solutions remain scarce.
The Noida International Airport, which has seen its first phase inaugurated, is intended to alleviate congestion at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport and serve as a major aviation hub for the National Capital Region (NCR). While long-term plans include a rapid rail corridor and a metro link, these are not expected to be operational for several years. In the interim, the Noida International Airport Limited (NIAL) and the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) are working on short-term measures, including the introduction of an electric airport taxi service and a city bus network. However, concerns persist regarding the high cost of private cab services, which can deter many potential passengers.
The need for better connectivity extends beyond passengers, with the airport also functioning as a cargo terminal. The Gautam Buddh Nagar police have formally requested YEIDA to widen all link roads and routes surrounding the airport to ensure smooth traffic flow for both local residents and visitors. This request stems from the increasing pressure of vehicles on the connecting roads, facilitating the movement of people, goods, and commercial vehicles from surrounding districts like Noida, Greater Noida, Hapur, Bulandshahr, Aligarh, and Mathura.
In response to the connectivity challenges, proposals have been put forth for enhancing rail links. Jewar MLA Dhirendra Singh has advocated for high-speed rail connectivity to the airport and the redevelopment of the Chola railway station into a modern, multimodal transport hub. Such developments are seen as crucial for ensuring seamless regional and national connectivity, benefiting not only Gautam Buddh Nagar and Bulandshahr districts but the wider Western Uttar Pradesh region.
Furthermore, safety regulations around the airport are being strictly enforced. Authorities have issued an advisory prohibiting any construction or tree planting within a 20-kilometer radius of the airport without prior clearance from the Airport Authority of India (AAI). This measure is critical for protecting flight operations and navigation systems from potential obstructions. Similarly, a 10-kilometer construction ban is in place to ensure aviation safety, preventing unregulated vertical development that could impact obstacle limitation surfaces and risk aircraft safety. Developers and residents are required to adhere to height restriction regulations and obtain necessary No Objection Certificates (NOCs) before undertaking any construction or planting activities.
Despite these ongoing efforts and plans for future infrastructure development, the immediate reality for many residents in the vicinity of the Noida International Airport is one of precarious access to essential transport links. The daily struggle to reach bus stops safely underscores the critical need for expedited implementation of local connectivity solutions to complement the development of this major international aviation gateway.
