Mumbai’s suburban rail network is set to witness a significant enhancement in passenger capacity with the successful completion of infrastructure upgrades at Virar railway station. The Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC), in coordination with Western Railway, has concluded upgrades that will allow for the introduction of longer 15-coach Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) trains, promising considerable relief to lakhs of daily commuters on the Virar-Dahanu corridor.
This development is a result of extensive work on the Virar–Dahanu Road quadrupling project. Platforms 3A and 4A at Virar station have been widened from 6.5 meters to 10.5 meters and extended to accommodate the 15-coach trains, a substantial increase from the previous 12-coach capacity. Additionally, a new home platform, Platform 5A, has been constructed on the western side of the station. These upgrades are crucial for easing congestion and streamlining train operations, especially during peak hours when Virar serves as a major hub for suburban services.
The infrastructure upgrades at Virar station were completed within a remarkable four-month timeframe. Railway authorities noted that this efficient execution was achieved despite the inherent operational challenges of working at a high-density suburban station. A successful trial run of an EMU rake has confirmed the readiness of the upgraded platforms for the introduction of the longer trains. Following the handing over of the upgraded infrastructure to Western Railway, the 15-coach suburban services are expected to commence shortly.
The introduction of 15-coach trains is anticipated to significantly boost the passenger-carrying capacity along the Virar-Dahanu corridor, which has experienced steady growth in commuter demand over the years. This enhancement is also expected to alleviate overcrowding, a long-standing issue for commuters on this stretch. The MRVC has stated that these augmentation works at Virar station represent a crucial step towards enhancing the section’s capacity.
The Virar-Dahanu Road quadrupling project also envisages the introduction of additional services. With the new infrastructure in place, the capacity of these train services will increase by approximately 25%. Western Railway is reportedly seeking additional rakes to convert existing 12-car services into 15-car formations. Furthermore, the overall project includes plans for a new car shed near Dahanu Road to support the increased fleet size and maintenance requirements.
These infrastructure improvements are part of a broader effort to modernize and expand Mumbai’s suburban railway network, a vital lifeline for millions of residents. The upgrades at Virar station are expected to improve commuter convenience and efficiency, contributing to a smoother travel experience for a large segment of the city’s population. The completion of these works highlights the ongoing commitment to enhancing public transportation infrastructure in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
