A young entrepreneur from Uttar Pradesh has successfully developed and implemented a biogas plant model capable of producing approximately 2.4 tonnes per day of compressed biogas (CBG), offering a sustainable alternative to conventional energy sources amidst global energy shortages.
Biogas Production Initiative in Hardoi
Adi Upendra Tiwari, a 29-year-old with a Master of Business Administration degree from the UK, established the energy unit near Bhailamau village in the Hardoi district of Uttar Pradesh. The facility is generating gas from organic waste materials, including cow dung, sugarcane press mud, and crop residue. This initiative represents a significant step towards addressing India’s growing energy demands through localized, renewable solutions.
According to details received by The Chenab Times, the Deputy Commissioner (Industries) in Hardoi, Harsh Pratap Singh, has indicated that the biogas produced by Mr. Tiwari’s plant is being utilized as a viable alternative to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG). Furthermore, the gas can also be processed to meet domestic energy requirements, functioning similarly to Piped Natural Gas (PNG).
Entrepreneurial Vision and Future Plans
Mr. Tiwari, a resident of Hardoi city, founded the energy plant in Bhailamau village with the explicit aim of contributing to the nation’s energy security. He stated that after completing his MBA from the University of Liverpool, United Kingdom, in 2022, he redirected his focus towards tackling the country’s escalating energy needs. The plant commenced gas production in September 2024, marking the culmination of his vision to create a sustainable energy model.
The current daily output of 2.4 tonnes of CBG is seen as a foundational achievement for the project. Mr. Tiwari has articulated ambitious plans to significantly scale up the plant’s production capacity. He intends to expand the facility to produce up to 12 tonnes of biogas per day in the near future, indicating a commitment to further developing and optimizing the renewable energy process. This expansion is expected to further bolster the supply of clean energy in the region and potentially serve as a blueprint for similar initiatives across the state and country.
The development of such localized biogas production units is crucial for India’s energy transition goals. By utilizing agricultural waste and animal byproducts, these plants not only generate clean energy but also offer solutions for waste management and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
