Pune is set to host a significantly upgraded Pune Grand Tour cycling race in 2027, featuring a substantially longer route and a considerable investment in road infrastructure. The race, which has received a nod from the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) to be elevated to UCI 2.1 status from UCI 2.2, will span approximately 950 kilometers, more than double the 437 kilometers of its inaugural edition.
Massive Infrastructure Development Underway
A minimum of Rs 700 crore is slated to be spent on roadworks by various agencies to bring the 950-km route up to international standards. This extensive funding will be contributed by the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), the Public Works Department (PWD), and the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC). Specifically, PMRDA is set to invest around Rs 260 crore, the PWD approximately Rs 362 crore, and the municipal corporations will contribute their respective budgets. These road upgrades are designed to meet stringent international criteria and are guaranteed for longevity, with contractors liable for maintenance for five years.
Expanded Route and UCI 2.1 Classification
The 2027 edition of the Pune Grand Tour will commence on Republic Day and is planned to consist of six stages. A notable portion of the route, up to 200 kilometers, will traverse within the city limits of Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, a significant increase from the 99 kilometers covered in the cities during the first edition. The upgrade in UCI classification to 2.1 signifies a major step forward for the event, placing it in a more prestigious category within the international cycling calendar.
Economic and Tourism Boost Anticipated
District Collector Jitendra Dudi highlighted that the previous edition of the race had successfully placed Pune on the global map. The upcoming event is expected to be even more expansive, contributing not only to the promotion of sports but also to a significant boost in tourism and the local economy. The race aims to showcase the diverse historical, cultural, and natural heritage of the Pune district, including areas such as Sinhagad, Saswad, Junnar, Rajgurunagar, and the picturesque Lonavala-Khandala ghat section.
Logistical Planning and Road Safety
The district administration is undertaking comprehensive logistical planning, with directives issued to all concerned departments for traffic regulation, security, and medical arrangements. Efforts are being made to ensure minimal disruption to the daily lives of residents while allowing citizens to enjoy the event. The administration has emphasized the importance of high-quality roads, with contractors adhering to Indian Road Congress and UCI standards. The race route will encompass a variety of terrains, including urban roads, highways, ghat sections, and rural stretches, promising a demanding test of endurance for the cyclists.
Event Schedule and Participants
The six-stage race is scheduled to run from January 26 to January 31, 2027, with both the opening and closing stages planned on public holidays to minimize inconvenience. The opening stage will run from the International Convention Centre in Mulshi to Hinjewadi. The detailed schedule includes stages passing through Baramati, Saswad, Junnar, Rajgurunagar, Alandi, Lonavala, Khandala, and Pimpri-Chinchwad, concluding at Balgandharva Rangmandir. Similar to the previous edition, two Indian teams are expected to participate, alongside international competitors.
