The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has successfully planted 5,500 trees as part of its commitment to environmental conservation alongside the development of the Hinjawadi to Shivajinagar Metro Line 3 project. This initiative aims to balance urban infrastructure growth with ecological sustainability in Pune.

Information available with The Chenab Times indicates that the metro corridor, designated as Metro Line 3, is a critical component of Pune’s public transportation network. The construction of pillars, stations, and associated structures for this line impacted 1,305 existing trees. Of these, 557 trees were cut, while 748 were relocated and replanted. The large-scale tree plantation drive was undertaken across various locations in the city, including forest areas, government land parcels, and institutional campuses, to compensate for the environmental impact.

Officials have reported a remarkable 100% survival rate for all newly planted trees, and approximately 80% of the transplanted trees have also survived. In some instances, particularly in Hinjawadi Phase 2, the replanted trees have begun to bear flowers and fruits, signifying successful adaptation to their new environments. This success highlights the effectiveness of the PMRDA’s compensatory afforestation efforts.

To enhance transparency and public engagement, the project incorporates technology-driven monitoring. Each newly planted and relocated tree has been geo-tagged and fitted with a QR code. Citizens can scan these codes to access detailed information about the tree species, its ecological benefits, and other relevant data, fostering a sense of shared responsibility for the green cover. A comprehensive digital database of the plantation has been developed in collaboration with technical partners.

Abhijit Chaudhari, Metropolitan Commissioner of PMRDA, stated that this initiative demonstrates how infrastructure development can proceed in tandem with environmental responsibility. He emphasized that the healthy growth of the transplanted trees is a strong indicator of the project’s success. The initiative is being regarded as a model for sustainable urban development, showcasing how large-scale projects can integrate ecological preservation into their planning and execution phases.

The Hinjawadi to Shivajinagar Metro Line 3 project, being implemented on a Design, Build, Finance, Operate, and Transfer (DBFOT) model, is a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) initiative. The elevated metro line will span 23.203 kilometers and feature 23 stations, aiming to alleviate traffic congestion in areas like the Rajiv Gandhi IT Park, Hinjawadi, and surrounding regions. The project is expected to reduce pollution, prevent accidents, and improve the city’s overall livability index by providing an efficient and fast mode of transport.

This comprehensive approach to urban development, which prioritizes both infrastructure advancement and environmental stewardship, sets a precedent for future projects within the Pune Metropolitan Region and beyond. The successful survival rate of the planted and relocated trees underscores the efficacy of the PMRDA’s meticulous planning and execution in mitigating the environmental impact of large-scale infrastructure development.
