NEW DELHI: Delhi Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena, while attending the 71st foundation day celebrations of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital (SGRH) as the chief guest, lauded the institution’s legacy and expressed optimism about India’s trajectory in healthcare.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the Lieutenant Governor stated, “Sir Ganga Ram remains an icon of social responsibility. It is because of the efforts and vision of people like him that India’s healthcare future is bright.” The hospital, a prominent private healthcare provider in the national capital, celebrated its foundation day, underscoring its enduring legacy.
Originally established in Lahore in 1921 by philanthropist Sir Ganga Ram, the institution was rebuilt in Delhi in 1954 following India’s independence. Its foundation was rooted in philanthropic ideals, and this heritage continues to define its identity.
Lieutenant Governor Saxena described the occasion as holding both historical and contemporary significance, emphasizing that the founder’s vision was deeply ingrained in public service and social responsibility. He acknowledged the hospital’s management and trust for their dedication to preserving this legacy and core values, successfully balancing clinical excellence with an inclusive healthcare ecosystem.
Dr. Ajay Swaroop, Chairman of the Board of Management, highlighted the hospital’s ongoing commitment to its charitable obligations. He further stated that the trust incurred an expenditure of Rs 82 crore in the fiscal year 2025-26 specifically for providing free treatment to patients from economically weaker sections. This initiative underscores the hospital’s dedication to its founding principles.
Over the decades, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital has evolved into a multi-speciality institution, mirroring the changing landscape of urban healthcare in India. Concurrently, it plays a crucial role in medical education and research, contributing to the advancement of medical knowledge and training future healthcare professionals.
While the hospital consistently invests in cutting-edge technologies, research, and biotechnology, its journey from a philanthropic establishment in pre-partition India to its current standing as a leading private hospital in Delhi reflects the broader transformative journey of the healthcare sector across the nation. The institution’s ability to adapt and integrate modern advancements while maintaining its foundational ethos is a testament to its enduring strength.
The foundation day event served as a poignant reminder of the hospital’s rich history and the legacy shaped by decades of service. It highlighted the continuous effort to balance its philanthropic roots with the demanding requirements of contemporary medical care, ensuring that its services remain accessible and its standards remain high.
