POONCH, April 13: An old, rusted mortar shell was discovered by villagers in an open field in a forward area of Mendhar sector, located in the Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir, on Monday. The discovery prompted immediate action from authorities to ensure public safety.
The Chenab Times has learned that the mortar shell was found near Sandote in the Balakote area of Mendhar by local residents who subsequently alerted the authorities. The area is considered forward due to its proximity to the border.
Following the discovery, officials immediately summoned the Army’s Bomb Disposal Squad to the scene. The squad arrived and assessed the situation, determining the device to be an old, unexploded ordnance. For safety reasons and to prevent any potential harm, the mortar shell was subsequently destroyed through a controlled explosion conducted by the Army personnel. The operation was carried out with extreme caution to mitigate any risk to the surrounding population and environment.
This incident highlights the persistent challenge of unexploded ordnance in border regions. Over the years, such discoveries have become relatively common in areas that have historically experienced cross-border shelling and military activity. The Army and local administration have established protocols to deal with such eventualities, prioritizing swift and safe disposal to maintain peace and security.
The Mendhar sector, like other parts of the Poonch district and the wider Jammu and Kashmir region along the Line of Control, has been a sensitive area. The presence of old munitions poses a latent threat, and timely reporting by citizens, followed by professional intervention from security forces, has been crucial in preventing accidents.
Officials stated that investigations into the origin of the mortar shell were not immediately initiated, given its age and rusted condition. The primary focus remained on its safe neutralization. The villagers who first spotted the shell were commended for their vigilance and responsible action in immediately reporting the find to the authorities, thereby averting any potential danger.
The controlled demolition was conducted in a secure location, away from populated areas, ensuring that the process caused no damage or injury. The Army’s prompt response and expertise in handling explosive materials were vital in resolving the situation effectively. This incident underscores the ongoing efforts by security forces to maintain a secure environment in the region, even in dealing with legacy threats from past conflicts.
