SRINAGAR: The driving test process at the Bemina trial ground in Srinagar has been comprehensively digitised, incorporating online slot booking, SMS-based updates for candidates, and the expedited issuance of digital driving licences, officials announced. The reforms aim to streamline operations and enhance transparency in the licensing procedure.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that the driving skill tests are now conducted three days a week – Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays – under a structured, slot-based system designed to regulate the flow of applicants and ensure efficient management of the testing facility. This phased approach aims to prevent overcrowding and maintain order.

Assistant Regional Transport Officer (ARTO) Srinagar headquarters, Anis Ahmad, stated that the centre manages an average of 130 to 140 candidates each day. Applicants are mandated to book their testing slots either online or through authorised centres and must adhere strictly to their assigned dates for the test. This disciplined scheduling is crucial for the smooth functioning of the facility.

The ARTO elaborated on the operational data, indicating that approximately 70 to 80 four-wheelers undergo testing daily. The remaining slots are allocated for two-wheeler tests, with the distribution determined by category-wise bookings. This ensures that all vehicle categories receive adequate testing time within the operational week.

Transparency is a key feature of the newly digitised system. Every driving test is now videographed, and stringent identity verification is conducted at the entry points to the testing centre. These measures are in place to effectively eliminate the possibility of impersonation, a common issue in such administrative processes.

In instances of adverse weather conditions or other unavoidable circumstances that might disrupt the scheduled tests, the department has implemented an online rescheduling mechanism. Applicants receive immediate SMS alerts on their registered mobile numbers to inform them of any changes. Candidates can also access updated schedules through the dedicated online portal, providing them with real-time information.

Following the successful completion of the driving test, successful applicants receive confirmation messages via SMS. The digital driving licence is then issued and delivered to them within 48 hours of clearing the assessment. This swift digital delivery significantly reduces the waiting period for new drivers.

ARTO Anis Ahmad appealed to the public for their cooperation in ensuring the continued smooth operation of the system. He urged candidates to strictly adhere to their allocated test slots and to refrain from bringing unnecessary companions to the venue. This collective effort is expected to facilitate a seamless and timely completion of all driving tests.
