New Delhi: The Speaker of the Delhi Assembly, Vijender Gupta, has been accorded Z category security in response to a series of bomb threat emails received by the legislative body in recent weeks. This enhanced security measure comes in the wake of multiple targeted threats and a significant security breach that occurred on the premises.
Heightened Security Measures Implemented
According to an official statement, the Assembly Secretariat and the Speaker’s office have received approximately six to seven threatening emails since the commencement of the budget session on March 23. These emails have raised serious concerns regarding the safety of the Assembly members and staff.
The decision to upgrade the Speaker’s security to Z category includes round-the-clock protection from a specialized security team and a dedicated escort vehicle that will accompany him at all times. The Z category security typically involves a detail of around 22 personnel, including personal security officers, escorts, surveillance staff, and armed guards.
Recent Security Breach Underscores Vulnerabilities
Adding to the concerns, a recent incident on April 6 saw an individual breach the Assembly premises by driving a vehicle through a boundary gate. The individual reportedly placed a bouquet and garland near the Speaker’s office before leaving. This breach exposed significant lacunae in the existing security apparatus, prompting a high-level inquiry involving officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Delhi government’s Home Department, Delhi Police, and the Intelligence Bureau.
Comprehensive Fortification of Assembly Complex
In light of these events, the Delhi Assembly complex is undergoing a rigorous security fortification. The measures being implemented include the installation of automated boom barriers at all entry and exit points to ensure mandatory and thorough checks for all individuals and luggage. A Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) quick response team, along with a dedicated vehicle, has been stationed on-site to maintain a constant patrol within the premises and to respond immediately to any potential threats.
Furthermore, hydraulic road blockers are being installed at all entry points to prevent unauthorized vehicle access. Security personnel, a combination of Delhi Police and CRPF, are being deployed at each gate with clearly defined responsibilities to ensure coordinated vigilance. The Assembly Secretariat has emphasized that these steps are precautionary and necessary to maintain the security of democratic institutions.
Ongoing Investigation into Threats
Authorities are actively investigating the origin of the threatening emails. Cyber teams are engaged in tracing the sender, and while the threats are currently believed to be a hoax, all necessary precautions are being taken. The intensified security measures aim to deter any further incidents and ensure a secure environment for legislative activities within the Delhi Assembly.
