SRINAGAR: Hurriyat Conference chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has appealed to the authorities for the temporary release of jailed Member of Parliament Engineer Rashid on humanitarian grounds, allowing him to visit his critically ill father.
The appeal was made following Mirwaiz’s visit to Khazir Mohammad Sheikh, Engineer Rashid’s father, who is currently undergoing treatment at SMHS Hospital in Srinagar. Information was available with The Chenab Times that the family is experiencing significant distress due to the father’s critical condition and his expressed wish to see his son.
During his visit to the hospital, Mirwaiz observed the difficult circumstances faced by the families of detained individuals. He highlighted the father’s desire to be reunited with his son during this critical period, emphasizing the humanitarian aspects of such situations. Mirwaiz offered prayers for the swift recovery of Khazir Mohammad Sheikh.
Engineer Rashid, a former MLA from the Langate constituency, is currently in custody following his arrest in connection with a case investigated by the National Investigation Agency. His political career has been marked by an independent stance and a focus on issues pertaining to the Kashmir region. He was elected as a Member of Parliament from the Baramulla constituency in 2024.
The appeal by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq underscores the complex humanitarian considerations that arise in cases involving individuals who are detained or imprisoned, particularly when immediate family members face serious health crises. The request is framed around the principle of allowing brief reunions for compassionate reasons, a practice that has been considered in various jurisdictions for similar circumstances. The outcome of this appeal is awaited, with the expectation that authorities will review the request based on established humanitarian protocols.
