Pune, Maharashtra – Pune Metro is significantly enhancing last-mile connectivity for its commuters through the introduction and expansion of feeder bus services. In coordination with the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Ltd (PMPML), new routes have been launched and are being planned to ensure seamless travel from metro stations to key residential and commercial areas.

The Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro) has been actively working to improve passenger access to its network and boost ridership. A notable development is the recent launch of a feeder bus service from Ramwadi Metro Station to the World Trade Center and EON IT Park in Kharadi. This service, which commenced operations on June 19, 2024, aims to facilitate the daily commute for residents and employees in these bustling areas. The route covers approximately seven kilometers, with a total of 17 to 20 designated stops, including key locations like Vadgaon Sheri, Vimannagar, Chandannagar, and Kharadi Bypass.

Expanding Reach and Improving Commuter Experience

The feeder bus service operates with fares ranging from Rs. 5 to Rs. 15, depending on the distance traveled, making it an accessible option for many. Initially, the service runs with two buses at 30-minute intervals from 7:30 am to 9:30 pm, seven days a week, with frequencies adjustable based on passenger demand. This initiative is considered crucial for establishing ‘first to last mile connectivity’ and promoting the use of public transport.

Maha-Metro has also been exploring a public-private partnership (PPP) model to operate feeder buses from major metro stations. Expressions of interest have been invited from experienced organizations to manage these services. This move comes as part of a broader strategy to address the challenge of limited last-mile connectivity from metro stations, which has been identified as a key factor affecting overall ridership.

Future Corridors and Integrated Transit

Looking ahead, Pune Metro is planning further expansion with new corridors, including Line 4 (Khadakwasla–Hadapsar–Kharadi) and Line 4A (Karvenagar–Warje–Manikbaug). These projects are expected to be completed within approximately four years and are anticipated to reduce travel time and ease traffic congestion in areas like Kothrud, Karvenagar, and Warje. As part of the development of these new lines, coordination with PMPML is underway to introduce additional buses that will function as feeder services to the Metro network.

Officials have highlighted that the future of urban mobility in Pune relies not only on infrastructure development but also on increased utilization of public transport and pedestrian facilities. The Metro aims to provide a reliable and sustainable mode of daily transport through an integrated approach. This includes exploring options for prepaid auto-rickshaw facilities and potentially shared auto services near metro stations, alongside the bus feeder services. The integration of buses, auto-rickshaws, and Metro services is a key objective to ensure seamless and efficient travel for commuters across the city.

The initiatives to enhance feeder services and last-mile connectivity are part of a comprehensive effort by Maha-Metro to make public transport more convenient and attractive, thereby encouraging more citizens to opt for the Metro and reduce reliance on private vehicles. The planning for these feeder services involves detailed studies of road geometrics, safety, bus stop infrastructure, population density, and the number of employees working in the vicinity of metro stations to ensure optimal route planning and service efficiency.
