NEW DELHI, April 18 – The Central Government has sanctioned a two percent increase in the Dearness Allowance (DA) for all its employees and pensioners, with the revised rate effective from January 1, 2024. The decision is expected to benefit millions of central government personnel.

According to details received by The Chenab Times, the Union Cabinet approved the hike, a move that has been a subject of anticipation among government staff. The Dearness Allowance is a component of the salary paid to government employees, intended to offset the impact of inflation. It is revised twice a year, typically in January and July, with official notifications often coinciding with festive seasons.

The delay in the announcement this year had led to some discontent among central government employees, who had been awaiting the formal notification. The hike to 50 percent of the basic pay is a significant development, as DA exceeding 50 percent is usually merged with the basic pay, necessitating a new calculation for allowances like house rent allowance (HRA). This current increase will be applied based on the existing formula.

The government periodically reviews the Dearness Allowance based on inflation indices. The calculation of DA is linked to the Consumer Price Index (CPI), which measures the average change over time in the prices paid by urban consumers for a market basket of consumer goods and services. The rise in the CPI directly influences the percentage increase in DA.

The decision to increase DA is a regular administrative exercise by the government to ensure that the purchasing power of its employees and pensioners is protected against rising living costs. This latest revision will lead to an increase in the monthly take-home salary for active employees and the pension amount for retirees. The implementation of the revised DA typically involves adjustments in salary and pension processing systems by various government departments and financial institutions.

With this approval, the total DA for central government employees and pensioners now stands at 50 percent of their basic pay. This threshold is significant as it often triggers a review and potential restructuring of other salary components, including the basic pay itself and various allowances. The government is expected to issue detailed guidelines on the implementation and its implications on other financial benefits soon.
