Jammu and Kashmir: Viral Photograph Captures Inter-Religious Harmony Amidst Hajj Departures

SRINAGAR: A poignant photograph, taken during the emotional Hajj 2026 departures from Srinagar, has garnered widespread attention online, symbolizing a moment of profound human connection that transcends religious and societal boundaries. The image depicts a Muslim woman pilgrim sharing a tender farewell with a Hindu police officer.

According to details received by The Chenab Times, the photograph was captured by intern Shariq Shafi while covering the Hajj departures, with guidance from multimedia journalist Shoaib Nazir. The image shows a woman pilgrim offering a kiss to Sonia, a police officer from the Jammu and Kashmir Police, identifiable by a bindi on her forehead. The moment, characterized by warmth and mutual respect, quickly resonated across social media platforms.

The photograph, taken outside the Hajj House in Srinagar on April 18, 2026, documents the departure of the first flight from Kashmir for Saudi Arabia. This year’s Hajj pilgrimage is a 40-day journey for the pilgrims.

The image’s viral spread was amplified by its reposting by several prominent figures, including DIG Police Imtiyaz Hussain, who described it as the “picture of the day from Kashmir.” Political leaders Mohit Bhan and Waheed Para also shared the photograph, underscoring its message of unity. Mohit Bhan commented on the affection displayed, stating, “As she departs for Haj, her affection speaks louder than words—this is the Kashmir where faith coexists and love is stronger than every divide.” Waheed Parra, MLA Pulwama, echoed this sentiment by reposting Bhan’s comment.

Shoaib Nazir, one of the journalists present, emphasized the spontaneity of the captured moment. He explained that the team, including Umaima and Umer Dar, was assigned to cover the Hajj departures. Nazir recalled noticing Shariq Shafi’s keenness to capture meaningful images and lent him a camera, drawing parallels to his own early career experiences. Upon reviewing Shafi’s shots, Nazir immediately recognized the impactful nature of the photograph featuring the police officer and the pilgrim.

Intern Shariq Shafi shared his perspective on the significance of the moment. He recounted his strong desire to cover the first Hajj convoy, despite it not being an assigned task for interns. After requesting his senior, Shoaib Nazir, to join the coverage, he was not only allowed but also entrusted with a camera. This gesture of trust from Nazir was particularly meaningful. While observing the scene, Shafi noticed the interaction between the police officer and the pilgrim and proceeded to take multiple photographs. The subsequent widespread sharing and positive reception of his image, he stated, made him feel that it possessed the power to touch people’s hearts.

The Hajj, a mandatory religious pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia, is one of the five pillars of Islam, required for every adult Muslim who is physically and financially capable of undertaking the journey at least once in their lifetime. The viral photograph serves as a powerful reminder of inter-community harmony and the strength of human connection, particularly in the context of shared spiritual journeys.
