The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) has extended its support to the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)-led alliance ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi announced the party’s backing for the DMK alliance, urging voters to cast their ballots in favour of Chief Minister M. K. Stalin’s coalition. This endorsement comes as campaigning intensifies across Tamil Nadu for the April 23 polls.
Owaisi shared his appeal through a video message on social media, expressing confidence that Stalin would return to power. He specifically urged voters to support the alliance candidates, noting that AIMIM had already declared its support for the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance. The AIMIM chief also made a particular appeal for the Vaniyambadi constituency, encouraging voters to support Syed Farooq of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), who is contesting as part of the DMK-led coalition.
The support from AIMIM is seen as a significant political gesture, potentially enhancing the DMK alliance’s visibility among minority communities and in urban constituencies. Political analysts suggest that this alignment is part of broader strategies by regional and national parties to consolidate electoral coalitions. Tamil Nadu’s political landscape has traditionally been dominated by bipolar contests between the DMK and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), with smaller parties often aligning with major fronts to bolster their electoral prospects.
The upcoming state elections are drawing considerable attention, with major political entities actively seeking support from various groups. The AIMIM’s backing adds another layer to the evolving electoral dynamics in Tamil Nadu. The election is scheduled to take place in a single phase on April 23, with the counting of votes set for May 4.
