In a significant display of cross-party unity, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) Lok Sabha MP Supriya Sule are set to share a stage for the first time to jointly appeal for votes for Sunetra Pawar in the upcoming Baramati Assembly by-election. The event, scheduled for Tuesday, marks an unprecedented move in the state’s political landscape, aiming to garner support for Sunetra Pawar, who is contesting the by-election necessitated by the tragic demise of her husband, Ajit Pawar.

Joint Appeal Across Party Lines

The joint appeal by leaders from opposing political factions underscores the unique circumstances surrounding the Baramati by-election. While Fadnavis represents the ruling alliance, Supriya Sule, daughter of NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar, is a prominent opposition figure. Their shared platform to support Sunetra Pawar, who is also Ajit Pawar’s wife, signifies a rare moment of political consensus. This unprecedented collaboration is expected to draw significant attention as campaigning for the by-election intensifies.

Congress Withdraws Candidacy

Adding to the unique nature of this by-election, the Congress party has decided to withdraw its candidate, Akash More, from the Baramati contest. This decision followed appeals from leaders across various parties, including those from the NCP and even Sharad Pawar himself. The Congress stated its decision was made as a mark of respect for Ajit Pawar, whose political journey began with the Congress. While 23 independent candidates remain in the fray, they are not considered to pose a significant threat to Sunetra Pawar’s prospects.

Baramati’s Political Legacy

The Baramati Assembly seat holds a deeply rooted political legacy, having been consistently represented by members of the Pawar family. Ajit Pawar, who previously held the seat for seven consecutive terms, passed away in a plane crash in January. His wife, Sunetra Pawar, is now contesting to carry forward this legacy. The by-election, scheduled for April 23, with vote counting on May 4, is crucial for the NCP and its allies, as they seek to maintain their stronghold in the region. The Pawar family has a long-standing history of winning both the Baramati Lok Sabha and Assembly seats, with notable figures like Sharad Pawar, Ajit Pawar, and Supriya Sule having consistently secured victories in the past.

Campaign Dynamics and Family Support

Despite the broader political alliances, the campaign for Sunetra Pawar has also seen significant family involvement. Her younger son, Jay Pawar, has been actively leading her campaign efforts. While Supriya Sule had initially remained away from campaigning, her decision to join the joint appeal alongside Chief Minister Fadnavis marks a notable shift. This joint appeal is seen as a strategic move to consolidate support and ensure a decisive victory for Sunetra Pawar, reinforcing the family’s long-standing connection with the Baramati constituency.
