The deadline for admissions under Maharashtra’s Right to Education (RTE) Act has been extended to April 30, 2026, a move that comes as over 42,000 seats have been confirmed for the upcoming academic year. This extension provides an additional opportunity for parents to complete the admission process for their children into private unaided schools, which reserve 25% of their seats for students from economically weaker sections and disadvantaged groups.
The RTE admission process for the 2026-27 academic year began on February 17, 2026. Initially, the deadline for application submissions was March 31, 2026. However, the state government has granted extensions multiple times, reflecting the significant interest and logistical considerations involved in the admission cycle. This latest extension to April 30 follows earlier deadlines of March 18 and March 25, indicating a concerted effort to ensure all eligible children can secure a seat.
Information available with The Chenab Times indicates that the lottery draw for seat allotment was conducted on April 6, 2026, with a waiting list generated on April 10, 2026. Selected students were initially given time to confirm their admissions from April 10, with the previous deadline set for April 20, 2026. The decision to extend the deadline to April 30 was made to accommodate these students and allow for a smoother completion of the admission formalities.
The RTE Act mandates that private unaided schools reserve a quarter of their seats for children belonging to economically weaker sections or disadvantaged groups. This year, the total number of available seats across 8,699 schools in Maharashtra stands at 1,14,732. As of the extended deadline for applications, over 2.4 lakh applications had been submitted, highlighting the substantial demand for these reserved seats. While the number of applications has seen a slight decrease compared to the previous year, the demand remains high, underscoring the importance of the RTE scheme in providing access to quality education.
Recent changes in the admission process included the relaxation of the distance restriction. Initially, a rule limited school selection to within a 1 km radius of the student’s residence. However, following court directives and representations from parents, this restriction was relaxed to include schools within a 1-3 km radius and beyond, depending on seat availability. This change aimed to ensure that children are not denied admission if no eligible institution is available nearby.
The admission process involves several key stages, including online application, a computerized lottery draw, seat allotment, and document verification. Parents are required to submit various documents, such as the child’s birth certificate, Aadhaar cards of the child and parents, proof of residence, income certificate (for economically weaker sections), and caste or disability certificates if applicable. The verification of these documents by the schools is crucial for confirming the admission.
The Maharashtra School Education Department has been working to streamline the admission process, which has seen its share of adjustments and extensions. The inclusion of additional schools and seats, alongside the relaxation of distance norms, is expected to provide further relief to applicants. The department has also ensured that minority-run institutions, whose minority status approval was temporarily on hold, are participating in the RTE admissions, thereby increasing the overall availability of seats.
