Political leaders from across the spectrum in Jammu and Kashmir gathered on Wednesday to pay homage to the 26 individuals who lost their lives in a militant attack in Pahalgam last year. The first anniversary of the incident was marked by tributes and reflections on the enduring impact of the violence.

According to details received by The Chenab Times, leaders from the National Conference, Congress, Bharatiya Janata Party, People’s Conference, and Apni Party, among others, issued statements and participated in commemorative events to honor the victims. The attack, attributed to Lashkar-e-Taiba militants, continues to be remembered as a deeply painful event for the region.

National Conference Acknowledges Lingering Grief

Imran Nabi Dar, state spokesperson for the National Conference, stated that the attack had brought profound sadness and tears to the people of Kashmir. He emphasized that Kashmiris had stood united in condemning the incident, sending a clear message of collective grief. Dar noted the damaging effect the attack had on the Union territory’s economy and expressed hope that security agencies would enhance their defenses, particularly in tourist areas, to prevent future occurrences.

Congress Calls for Reflection and Proactive Governance

Tariq Hameed Karra, president of the Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee, described the remembrance of the attack as being accompanied by a “continuing sense of anguish.” He suggested that the perceived lack of meaningful authority in institutions and the persistent security concerns diminish the promise of democracy. Karra called for statesmanship characterized by reflection, course correction, and a willingness to listen and act in the national interest, indicating a growing perception that governance has become reactive.

Ghulam Ahmed Mir, leader of the Congress Legislature Party, reaffirmed the party’s commitment to ending violence and building a future where all lives in Jammu and Kashmir are safe and valued. He expressed confidence that militancy would not succeed in breaking the spirit of the people.

BJP Vows Strong Response, Commemorates in South Kashmir and Jammu

The Jammu and Kashmir BJP organized a rally in Anantnag district to observe the day as a “black day.” Former MLC Sofi Yusuf paid tribute to the victims and referenced the government’s firm stance against Pakistan, stating that any hostile action would be met with a decisive response. In Jammu, BJP leaders and activists, including party president and MP Sat Sharma, gathered at Maharaja Hari Singh Park to offer tributes and raise slogans in support of the martyrs and the nation. Sharma asserted that India has demonstrated its ability to defend itself when necessary.

BJP MLA Shagun Parihar recalled the victims with emotion, drawing from her own experience as part of a martyr’s family and expressing hope for a future free from such incidents. Party leader Divyani Rana highlighted the central leadership’s commitment to a strong response against any harm to Indian citizens, underscoring the nation’s perceived security under decisive leadership.

Other Political and Social Groups Pay Homage

Sajad Lone, chief of the People’s Conference and MLA Handwara, acknowledged that the scars of the Pahalgam attack would remain, expressing a hope for peace and the eradication of terror from the region.

Apni Party chief Altaf Bukhari conveyed his deep respect and tribute to the lost souls on X, noting the persistent pain and sense of loss on the anniversary.

Former J&K DGP S.P. Vaid echoed the sentiment of national unity in remembering the victims, emphasizing India’s zero-tolerance policy against terrorism and praising the response of security forces.

Workers of Shiv Sena (UBT) held a protest in Jammu city, condemning Pakistan. The Dogra Front Shiv Sena organized a ‘yagya’ for the departed souls. The Traders Federation Warehouse also organized a function, with its president Deepak Kumar emphasizing unity and support for the victims’ families.

Various other organizations, including the Vishva Hindu Parishad, Bajrang Dal, local social groups, and some educational institutions, also held tribute programs to honor those who died in the Pahalgam attack.
