The Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) has formally approved the establishment of a new Kendriya Vidyalaya in Ramban district, Jammu and Kashmir. This decision marks a significant expansion of central government school infrastructure within the Union Territory.
The Chenab Times has learned that the school is among 85 new Kendriya Vidyalayas sanctioned by the Government of India in December 2024, operating under the Civil/Defence sector. This particular institution falls within the Udhampur Parliamentary Constituency.
The official order from KVS headquarters in New Delhi specifies that the approval was contingent upon the successful transfer of identified land by the sponsoring authority to KVS and the availability of suitable temporary accommodation. These conditions are mandatory prerequisites for the operationalisation of new schools under the scheme.
The new Kendriya Vidyalaya will be established at Kowbag in Ramban district, with the designated Pin Code being 182144. It is slated to commence operations from the academic session 2026–27. Initially, the school will offer classes from Grade I to V, with a single section for each grade. Future expansion of the institution will be determined based on feasibility studies and further approvals.
Authorities have stated that the admission process for the new school is expected to be completed within 30 days following the finalisation of all formalities related to land transfer and the securing of temporary accommodation. The establishment of this Kendriya Vidyalaya is anticipated to enhance access to quality central education for residents in the Ramban region, as well as for the children of central government employees posted in the area.
Kendriya Vidyalayas are a network of central government schools run by the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan in India, established with the objective of providing uniform education across the country irrespective of the location of the employee. They are known for their standardized curriculum and focus on both academics and co-curricular activities. The expansion in Ramban district is seen as a move to extend these educational opportunities to more remote areas of Jammu and Kashmir.
The land identified for the school is reported to be strategically located to serve the needs of the local population. The civil sector Kendriya Vidyalayas are typically established in areas with a concentration of central government employees or in locations deemed educationally underserved. The phased rollout of classes, starting from Grade I to V, is a standard practice to allow for gradual infrastructure development and faculty recruitment.
This initiative is part of a broader national effort to bolster educational infrastructure and ensure that students across various regions have access to CBSE-affiliated schooling. The Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir has been a focus area for developmental projects aimed at improving public services and amenities.
The timely operationalisation of the school from the 2026–27 academic session will be crucial for students seeking admission. The Ramban district administration has been actively involved in facilitating the land transfer and other necessary clearances to expedite the project.
