Delhi BJP Accuses Kejriwal of ‘Lavish Property’ in Lodhi Road, Labels Him ‘Rahman Dacoit’

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Delhi has leveled serious accusations against Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, alleging his involvement with a “lavish” property located in the upscale Lodhi Road area of the national capital. The party questioned the source of funds used for its development, drawing parallels to previous allegations surrounding the Chief Minister’s official residence.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that senior BJP leader Parvesh Verma presented documents at a press conference on Saturday, which he claimed were layout plans and interior design schematics for a residence at 95 Lodhi Estate. Verma asserted that this property is connected to Arvind Kejriwal and characterized the design concept as ‘contemporary transitional,’ detailing various spaces including a foyer, living room, bedrooms, lounge, and a meeting room, complete with customized furniture and decor elements.

During the press conference, Verma directly challenged Kejriwal’s public image as an ‘aam aadmi’ (common man). He stated, “He did not want an ordinary house, but a lavish one,” echoing the BJP’s earlier ‘Sheesh Mahal’ (palace of mirrors) accusations concerning the Chief Minister’s official abode. The BJP leader invoked historical figures such as Mahatma Gandhi and Bhagat Singh, suggesting they would be critical of such alleged conduct.

Further linking the issue to governance, Verma claimed that Kejriwal was reportedly absent during the construction of his residence, coinciding with the period of the COVID-19 pandemic. He also alluded to internal discord within the AAP, suggesting that some leaders were departing the party due to what he described as a “lavish lifestyle” being adopted by its leadership.

Verma posed four specific questions to Kejriwal regarding the Lodhi Estate property. He sought details on the total expenditure incurred and the origin of the funding for this residence. He also inquired whether the alleged lavish spending within the party was a contributing factor to the departures of its leaders. Furthermore, he questioned the necessity for repeated instances of what he termed ‘Sheesh Mahals’ and alleged potential connections between the property and the proceeds from the now-discontinued liquor policy case.

Responding to the allegations made by the BJP, Delhi Minister Atishi Marlena vehemently dismissed the claims. She posted on her X (formerly Twitter) account, stating, “All the pictures released by Parvesh Verma are fake. They are not pictures of Kejriwal ji’s house.” Atishi added that if there were genuine questions about luxury, then the houses of Rekha Gupta and the Lieutenant Governor should also be opened for public scrutiny. She concluded by asserting that the public would then be able to form its own judgment.

The BJP’s allegations come amid ongoing political discourse in Delhi, with the opposition party frequently scrutinizing the spending and policies of the AAP government. The ‘Sheesh Mahal’ allegations have been a recurring theme in the political exchanges between the two parties. The specific property at Lodhi Road, presented by the BJP as evidence of alleged financial impropriety, is now a focal point of the political contest.

The BJP’s strategy appears to be to contrast Kejriwal’s ‘aam aadmi’ image with allegations of extravagant personal spending, aiming to erode public trust. The party seeks to link these alleged expenditures to potentially questionable financial dealings, including its reference to the scrapped liquor policy. This tactic is often employed to create doubt and dissatisfaction among voters.

Meanwhile, the AAP, through its representatives like Atishi, has resorted to outright denial and has challenged the authenticity of the evidence presented by the BJP. By questioning the credibility of the source documents and proposing reciprocal scrutiny of other residences, the AAP aims to deflect criticism and portray the allegations as politically motivated attacks. The party’s defense strategy centers on discrediting the BJP’s claims and shifting the narrative.

The political climate in Delhi remains charged, with such accusations and counter-accusations forming a significant part of the public discourse. The outcome of these allegations and the subsequent public reaction could potentially influence future political dynamics within the state.
