SRINAGAR: The Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir (SKUAST-K) campus at Shuhama marked World Veterinary Day with a comprehensive event emphasizing the critical role of veterinarians in ensuring food safety and safeguarding public health. The day-long celebration was held at the Faculty of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry (FVSc and AH), focusing on the theme ‘Veterinarians: Guardians of Food and Health’. This event served as the culmination of a fortnight of related activities organized across the university campus.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that the celebrations commenced with the ceremonial hoisting of the World Veterinary Association flag, followed by a rally and formal proceedings at the Harmukh Auditorium. Dignitaries present on the occasion released a wall magazine titled ‘Vet’s Vision 2026’, the faculty’s annual report, and a student literary publication. These releases highlighted the academic and professional achievements within the veterinary sciences domain.

In the preceding two weeks, SKUAST-K Kashmir organized a diverse array of activities designed to engage students and the wider community. These included sporting events, debates, quizzes, clinical camps, blood donation drives, and environmental initiatives such as plantation drives. Outreach programs were also conducted to disseminate knowledge and foster awareness. Approximately 200 school students participated in educational visits to the campus, gaining firsthand insights into veterinary science and its applications. Winners of various competitions were recognized with certificates and medals during the main event.

Speakers at the World Veterinary Day observance elaborated on the evolving and increasingly vital role of veterinary sciences in the broader context of public health, the integrity of food systems, and environmental sustainability. Particular emphasis was placed on the necessity of reinforcing livestock-based rural economies, which form the backbone of many communities in the region. The conservation of indigenous animal genetic resources was also underscored as a crucial aspect of maintaining biodiversity and agricultural resilience.

The university administration reaffirmed its commitment to fostering innovation-driven agricultural development. Ongoing programmes aimed at stimulating the region’s bio-economy were highlighted, including significant investments channeled through flagship initiatives such as the Holistic Agriculture Development Programme (HADP) and the Jammu and Kashmir Competitiveness Improvement Project (JKCIP). These initiatives are designed to modernize agricultural practices and enhance economic opportunities.

The concluding session featured a keynote lecture that delved into the global theme of World Veterinary Day, calling for concerted and integrated efforts from all stakeholders. The objective is to strengthen animal health systems comprehensively and ensure that sustainable development practices are adopted across the veterinary and agricultural sectors. The emphasis was on collaborative approaches to address current and future challenges in food safety and public health.
