Sanjay Jamuar has been appointed as the first Chief Executive Officer of Delhi Metro International Limited (DMIL), a newly established entity by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) tasked with expanding metro rail projects and operations beyond the national capital and into international markets.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that DMIL has been created with government backing to offer consultancy, advisory services, and undertake operation and maintenance (O&M) assignments for metro and urban transit systems both within India and globally. This strategic move aims to position the DMRC as a significant player in international urban transport infrastructure and sustainable mobility solutions.
Jamuar, a former Indian Railway Traffic Service (IRTS) officer, brings a wealth of experience gathered from his tenures with Indian Railways, DMRC, and international projects spanning the United Kingdom, the United States, Europe, and the Middle East. His academic credentials include a postgraduate diploma in strategic leadership from Warwick Business School and research in transport economics from Leeds University.
His appointment marks a significant return for Jamuar, who was among the DMRC’s initial Operation and Maintenance (O&M) employees when he joined in 1998. The DMRC views his return as a homecoming and anticipates that his leadership will significantly bolster DMIL’s objective of exporting the Delhi Metro’s established technical expertise, robust project execution capabilities, and proven operational efficiency to diverse global markets.
The DMRC already possesses a strong track record in metro consultancy and project execution. Currently, the corporation is involved with the Dhaka Metro project in Bangladesh and manages key O&M contracts for metro systems in Indian cities including Chennai, Mumbai, and Patna. Furthermore, the DMRC has contributed to the construction and planning phases of metro networks in cities such as Jaipur and Mumbai.
With the formal launch of DMIL, the DMRC intends to amplify its international engagements. The company aims to provide comprehensive, end-to-end metro solutions and actively support cities worldwide in the development of efficient, modern, and sustainable public transportation systems. This initiative is expected to leverage the DMRC’s extensive experience and success in developing one of the most complex and successful metro networks in the world.
The establishment of DMIL signifies a strategic pivot for the DMRC, moving beyond its domestic operational scope to become a global contender in urban rail infrastructure. This expansion is anticipated to not only generate new revenue streams but also to foster greater international collaboration and knowledge exchange in the field of public transportation. The DMRC’s accumulated expertise in project management, engineering, and operational efficiency, honed over decades of service in Delhi, provides a strong foundation for DMIL’s global ambitions.
The mandate of DMIL includes offering specialized consultancy services for feasibility studies, project planning, and design. It will also undertake the operation and maintenance of existing and new metro lines, ensuring international standards of safety, efficiency, and passenger experience. The entity is poised to be a key driver in promoting sustainable urban mobility solutions across different geographical and economic contexts.
Jamuar’s extensive background in railway operations and management, coupled with his international exposure, makes him a fitting choice to lead this ambitious venture. His appointment is seen as a crucial step in translating the DMRC’s domestic success into a global brand recognised for excellence in urban rail transit development and management.
The DMRC has consistently been at the forefront of introducing technological advancements and innovative practices in metro operations. DMIL is expected to channel these innovations into its international projects, offering bespoke solutions tailored to the specific needs of different cities and countries. This proactive approach is crucial in navigating the complexities of global infrastructure development and ensuring the successful implementation of metro projects worldwide.
The creation of DMIL and the appointment of its CEO are indicative of India’s growing capabilities and ambitions in the global infrastructure sector. The initiative also aligns with the broader national agenda of promoting ‘Make in India’ and showcasing Indian engineering and project management prowess on an international stage. The success of DMIL could pave the way for further Indian companies to expand their global footprint in the infrastructure domain.
