SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir administration is set to enhance regional mobility and bolster the tourism sector with the forthcoming extension of the train service from Jammu Tawi to Srinagar, scheduled to commence on April 30. This significant development aims to provide a direct and more efficient travel link between the Union Territory’s two principal cities.

The Chenab Times has learned that a Vande Bharat Express, which has been operational for the past nine months connecting Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra and Srinagar, will now extend its route to include Jammu Tawi. This extension will integrate the two capital cities directly into the rail network, offering greater convenience for passengers.

Officials have indicated that the upgraded Vande Bharat Express will feature a 20-coach configuration, a substantial increase from the previous eight-coach Vande Bharat train that operated between Katra and Srinagar. This augmented capacity is expected to accommodate a larger number of travellers, thereby strengthening connectivity and providing a crucial impetus to the region’s tourism industry.

The administration has emphasized the importance of continued expansion of such rail services, highlighting the need for both increased frequency and greater passenger capacity to cater to the growing demand. The formal launch event on April 30 is anticipated to address any operational considerations and gather further input for service improvement, with a Union Minister expected to be in attendance.

Beyond the railway expansion, the Chief Minister also addressed the development of the startup ecosystem within Jammu and Kashmir. He acknowledged that while the region is in a developing stage compared to more established states, it can draw valuable lessons from their experiences. The introduction of the Startup Policy in 2024 has reportedly established a framework for ecosystem growth, with dedicated budgetary provisions now available for funding and development initiatives.

Efforts are actively underway to cultivate a structured startup environment in the Union Territory. Plans include the establishment of an incubation centre at the Government College of Engineering and Technology later this year, a move that follows a recent request from the institution.

Earlier on the same day, the Chief Minister inaugurated the School of Architecture building at the Government College of Engineering and Technology in Jammu. The ceremony was attended by Minister Sakina Itoo and MLA Nagrota Devyani Rana. This new facility is poised to strengthen the technical education infrastructure and enhance learning prospects for students in the region.
