The Nashik-Trimbakeshwar Kumbh Mela Authority (NTKMA) has vehemently denied allegations of irregularities in the procurement process for dustbins, slated for use during the 2027 Kumbh Mela. The denial comes in response to claims made by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which alleged that the Express of Interest (EOI) issued by the authority contained conditions typical of a tender process, raising concerns about transparency and fairness.
AAP’s Concerns Over Procurement Process
Vijay Kumbhar, an AAP representative, voiced his party’s concerns, stating that the EOI appeared to be a disguised tender with stringent conditions that might not favour small and medium-scale industries. He further alleged a lack of transparency in the evaluation criteria and called for an immediate inquiry into the matter, emphasizing the need for accountability and transparency in the use of public funds.
Kumbhar pointed out the relatively short deadline of nine days for contractors to submit their bids, suggesting this was insufficient for a thorough bidding process. He also claimed that the conditions stipulated in the EOI were not conducive to broader participation from various industrial players.
Authority’s Rebuttal and Clarification
Shekhar Singh, the Nashik-Trimbakeshwar Kumbh Mela Authority Commissioner, explicitly stated that there were no irregularities in the procurement process. He clarified that the document issued was indeed an EOI and not a tender, and that the process was conducted with all due diligence. The authority maintained that the EOI was a preliminary step to gauge interest and gather information from potential service providers, and not a final selection process.
The NTKMA emphasized that all procedures were followed in accordance with established guidelines and that the intent was to ensure efficient and transparent preparation for the upcoming mega-event. The authority assured that the procurement of necessary items, including dustbins, would be managed responsibly to meet the demands of the Kumbh Mela, which is expected to draw a massive congregation of devotees and visitors.
Preparations for the 2027 Kumbh Mela
The Simhastha Kumbh Mela in 2027, scheduled to be held in Nashik and Trimbakeshwar, is a significant religious and cultural event drawing millions of pilgrims. Preparations for the Mela are underway, with a special authority, the Nashik-Trimbakeshwar Kumbh Mela Authority, established to oversee planning, execution, and management of the event. This authority has been empowered with administrative and financial responsibilities to expedite works related to infrastructure development, sanitation, and logistics.
The Maharashtra government has been actively involved in these preparations, with Chief Secretary Rajesh Aggarwal recently directing all concerned agencies to expedite the completion of Kumbh-related infrastructure projects, emphasizing quality and durability. Projects worth over ₹15,000 crore are reportedly under execution, with a deadline of March 2027 for major works. These preparations include upgrades to sewage treatment plants, development of new ghats along the Godavari River, and the construction of various essential facilities to manage the expected influx of pilgrims from India and abroad.
The focus remains on ensuring that all infrastructure and civic amenities are in place to facilitate a smooth and well-organized Kumbh Mela. The NTKMA has reiterated its commitment to transparency and efficiency in all its operations leading up to the event.
