Maharashtra has unveiled its Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy 2026, a strategic move aimed at transforming the state into a national hub for AI development. The policy, approved by the state cabinet, targets attracting over ₹10,000 crore in investments and generating approximately 1.5 lakh jobs by 2031. This initiative aligns with the national ‘India AI Mission’ and emphasizes research, innovation, and responsible AI governance.

Maharashtra AI Policy Targets Investment and Job Creation

The Maharashtra Artificial Intelligence Policy 2026, spearheaded by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, outlines a comprehensive vision for the state’s AI ecosystem. The policy intends to foster economic growth, improve public services, and enhance industrial efficiency through the widespread adoption of artificial intelligence. The state government has set ambitious goals, including the establishment of a ‘Maharashtra AI Mission’ to oversee the policy’s implementation and to position the state as a leader in ethical and inclusive AI development.

Key Initiatives and Infrastructure Development

To achieve its objectives, the policy proposes several key initiatives. These include the establishment of six Centres of Excellence (CoEs) in critical sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, education, urban development, Marathi language and culture, and finance and revenue. Additionally, five AI innovation cities are planned to foster a conducive environment for AI research and development. The policy also emphasizes building robust AI infrastructure within the state, including the provision of computing resources and the development of AI tools and platforms.

A significant component of the policy is the focus on skill development. The Maharashtra AI Mission aims to provide AI skills training to two lakh youth and professionals, ensuring a skilled workforce ready to meet the demands of an AI-driven economy. The policy also seeks to support the startup ecosystem by establishing an ‘AI Startup Venture Fund’ of ₹500 crore, with equal contributions from the state government and the private sector. Furthermore, provisions are made to support 5,000 MSMEs with subsidies for AI adoption and the creation of a ‘Maha AI Tools Hub’ as a common platform for AI solutions.

Responsible AI and Governance Framework

Recognizing the importance of ethical considerations, the Maharashtra AI Policy 2026 includes a framework for responsible AI use. This involves mandatory annual AI readiness audits across all government departments to ensure compliance and transparency. The policy aims to create a governance structure that promotes ethical AI development and deployment, aligning with the national objective of fostering an inclusive and secure AI landscape.

The policy’s emphasis on ethical and inclusive AI development positions Maharashtra as a key player in the national AI strategy. By focusing on sectors crucial for societal development and economic progress, the state aims to leverage AI for the betterment of its citizens and to contribute to India’s overall growth in the artificial intelligence domain.
