RAMESWARAM: An unused mechanised boat anchored at the Rameswaram jetty was completely gutted in a fire that broke out on Thursday, April 30, 2026. Fire and Rescue Services personnel were pressed into action to control the blaze, which is suspected to have originated from scrap materials stored beneath the vessel.

Fire Breaks Out on Anchored Trawler

The boat, identified as ‘Pavalam’, had been out of use for an extended period and was moored on the southern side of the jetty. According to reports, fishermen engaged in repair work noticed the fire beneath the trawler and immediately alerted the authorities. Preliminary investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the fire.

The incident occurred during the annual two-month fishing ban, which commenced on April 15, preventing fishermen from venturing into the sea. While the fire was eventually doused, the boat sustained extensive damage, and authorities have initiated a probe into the incident.

Following the incident, police issued a warning to fishermen, advising them against discarding waste near anchored boats. Officials from the Fisheries Department stated that they would assess the condition of all unused trawlers anchored along the shores and take necessary steps for their timely removal.
