SRINAGAR, May 2: Kulgam Police have successfully dismantled an inter-state drug trafficking network, leading to the attachment of illegally acquired property valued at ₹92.73 lakh in Jammu. The operation, which began with the apprehension of a suspect in Qazigund, has highlighted the persistent challenge of narcotics trade in the region.
Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that the crackdown commenced on March 20, 2026, following the arrest of Mohammad Rafiq Mir of Panzinara, Srinagar, during a routine patrol near the Qazigund Railway Station. Mir was found in possession of approximately 16 grams of brown sugar, a form of heroin. A case was registered under FIR No. 43/2026 concerning Sections 8/21 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
During initial interrogation, Mir disclosed that his source for the contraband was Bagh Hussain Kasana, a resident of Channore Basti Gajansu in Jammu, who was then residing in Nikki Tawi. Acting on this lead, Kulgam Police secured a search warrant and conducted a raid at Kasana’s residence. The search yielded a further 265 grams of a heroin-like substance.
Subsequently, Section 29 of the NDPS Act was invoked against Kasana, who was arrested on March 22, 2026. Investigations revealed Kasana’s deep involvement in supplying narcotics across various parts of the Kashmir Valley to generate income. Financial probes indicated that he had no discernible legitimate source of income and had been engaged in drug peddling for an extended period. He is currently detained at District Jail Anantnag.
The financial investigation carried out by the Kulgam Police led to the identification and subsequent attachment of immovable assets believed to have been acquired through the proceeds of drug trafficking in Beli Charana, Jammu. These attached assets comprise land valued at approximately ₹71.52 lakh and a residential house estimated at ₹21.21 lakh, bringing the total value of attached property to ₹92.73 lakh.
Senior Superintendent of Police Kulgam, Anayat Ali Choudhary, addressing the development, emphasized the Kulgam Police’s unwavering commitment to dismantling drug networks and initiating stringent legal actions against individuals involved in the narcotics trade. He appealed to the public, particularly the youth, to steer clear of drug abuse and encouraged citizens to provide any information related to drug trafficking, assuring them of complete confidentiality.
The Kulgam Police reaffirmed their dedication to eradicating the menace of drugs from the region. They issued a stern warning that rigorous legal action will continue against offenders, highlighting the critical role of public cooperation in fostering a drug-free society. The operation underscores the continuous efforts by law enforcement agencies in Jammu and Kashmir to combat the illicit drug trade.
