NEW DELHI, May 3: A groundbreaking surgical technique developed at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi, is offering renewed hope to patients grappling with severe and complex spinal deformities, marking a significant advancement in treating conditions previously deemed high-risk.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that the modified surgical approach, the result of seven years of research and development by Dr. Bhavuk Garg and his team in the orthopaedic department at AIIMS, substantially improves outcomes for individuals with spinal deformities who previously faced limited treatment avenues and a high probability of surgical complications.

The technique is an evolved version of Posterior Vertebral Column Resection (PVCR), a procedure recognized globally for its complexity in correcting spinal deformities. The AIIMS modification, detailed in an international scientific publication in 2020, introduces a refined methodology that preserves critical posterior spinal elements until later stages of the surgery. This strategic preservation enhances spinal stability during the correction process, potentially mitigating the risks of neurological damage and other life-threatening complications often associated with conventional PVCR procedures.

Patients suffering from severe spinal deformities frequently experience debilitating symptoms, including severe spinal curvature, chronic pain, impaired breathing, an inability to maintain an upright posture, and significant psychological and social distress. Doctors at AIIMS noted that such surgeries were historically approached with apprehension due to the inherent risks. However, advancements in surgical techniques, meticulous planning, and enhanced peri-operative care have led to a remarkable improvement in safety profiles and recovery rates for these complex cases.

The successful application of this modified technique has enabled numerous patients, who previously faced challenges with basic daily activities such as walking, sitting comfortably, or participating in education and employment, to resume normal lives. Families of these patients have described the transformations as life-altering, emphasizing the restoration of not only physical mobility but also confidence and dignity.

The innovative approach developed at AIIMS has garnered international attention from spine surgeons, further bolstering India’s standing in the field of advanced orthopaedic and spinal care. Medical experts consider this innovation a pivotal advancement in managing some of the most challenging spinal deformities encountered globally, underscoring the potential for advanced medical solutions originating from Indian institutions.
