Nine people lost their lives in a devastating fire that engulfed a four-storey residential building in Delhi’s Vivek Vihar area in the early hours of Sunday, May 3, 2026. The blaze, which spread rapidly through the second, third, and fourth floors, trapped residents due to features intended for security, including heavy iron window grilles and a locked terrace door.
Fire Details and Rescue Efforts
The fire reportedly began around 3:13 am, with emergency services receiving the distress call shortly after. Fourteen fire tenders were dispatched to the scene, and firefighters worked for several hours to control the blaze, which was eventually brought under control by 8 am. During the extensive rescue operation, approximately 10 to 15 people were safely evacuated. However, nine individuals were declared brought dead at the hospital, and two others sustained minor injuries and were treated at Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital.
The deceased included members of three families. Among the victims were five members of one family, including an infant, and three members of another family. The victims’ bodies were recovered from various floors, with reports indicating one body from the first floor, five from the second, and three from a locked staircase area.
