Chennai: Actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay’s newly formed party, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), has made a striking debut in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, with early trends and declared results indicating a significant political realignment in the state. As vote counting progressed on May 4, 2026, TVK emerged as a formidable force, leading in a substantial number of constituencies and challenging the established dominance of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK).

According to details received by The Chenab Times, initial projections and declared results from the Election Commission of India (ECI) suggested TVK was on course to secure a significant mandate, with reports indicating leads in over 100 seats. Some analyses pointed towards the party inching closer to the halfway mark of 118 seats required for a simple majority in the 234-member Assembly. The party chief, C. Joseph Vijay, was reported to be leading in key constituencies such as Perambur and Tiruchirappalli (East), underscoring the widespread appeal of his political venture.

The electoral landscape of Tamil Nadu appeared to be undergoing a dramatic transformation, with the incumbent DMK facing considerable headwinds. Chief Minister M. K. Stalin, who contested from Kolathur, was reportedly trailing in his constituency, a significant development given his party’s previous stronghold. The DMK alliance, which included the Congress and DMDK, was seen struggling to maintain its previous electoral dominance, falling behind TVK and in some instances, the AIADMK. Udhayanidhi Stalin was, however, reported to be leading in Chepauk.

The AIADMK, led by Edappadi K. Palaniswami, also found itself in a challenging position. While initially showing some strength in certain pockets, the party was largely seen trailing behind TVK and DMK in many of the crucial contests. The party’s performance indicated a struggle to retain its traditional voter base amidst the emergence of a new political contender.

The Congress party, a key ally in the previous DMK government, appeared to be facing a difficult electoral battle, with reports suggesting it was trailing behind in major margins across several seats. This performance could have implications for the national dynamics of the party as well.

The 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections were marked by a high voter turnout, with the ECI reporting an overall participation rate of approximately 85.1%, the highest ever recorded for an assembly election in the state. Notably, the election saw a significant increase in female voter participation, with women constituting over 80% of the additional voters compared to previous elections, a trend that political analysts suggest may have played a crucial role in shaping the outcome.

The counting of votes commenced on the morning of May 4, 2026, across all 234 Assembly constituencies. The Election Commission of India oversaw the process, ensuring transparency and adherence to electoral protocols. By late afternoon, the trends solidified, pointing towards a historic debut for TVK and a significant shift in Tamil Nadu’s political narrative. The DMK managed to win the Gudalur constituency, marking one of its victories amidst the evolving trends.

The political journey of C. Joseph Vijay’s TVK began with his announcement to enter politics in 2024, and its rapid ascent has captured national attention. The party’s performance in this election is being closely watched as a potential precursor to future electoral realignments in Indian politics, drawing parallels to historical instances of cinema personalities successfully transitioning into mainstream politics in the state.

The final results, as declared by the Election Commission of India, will determine the composition of the next Tamil Nadu government and shape the state’s political future for the coming years. The impact of this election on the national political discourse is also anticipated to be substantial, given the significant population and economic influence of Tamil Nadu.
