Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) in Shimla is set to implement an Ability Enhancement and Development Programme (AEDP) across its affiliated colleges starting from the upcoming academic session. The initiative aims to equip students with crucial soft skills, employability skills, and enhance their technical and analytical capabilities.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that the introduction of AEDP is in line with the directives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which the university has officially adopted. The decision was finalized during a recent meeting of the standing committee of HPU’s academic council. The meeting, held under the leadership of Vice-Chancellor Prof Mahavir Singh, focused on several key academic matters pertinent to the university and its constituent colleges throughout the state.

The academic council’s standing committee, chaired by Dean of Studies Prof B K Shivram, deliberated extensively on various academic proposals. Several significant new courses were approved, including Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) programmes in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, designed to offer students modern, job-oriented education. The committee also gave its nod to the revised curricula for the third to sixth semesters, ensuring alignment with the NEP 2020 framework.

Further approvals included the syllabus for postgraduate (PG) entrance examinations and guidelines for the credit framework to be rolled out in colleges across Himachal Pradesh. These measures are intended to standardize academic progression and ensure adherence to national educational standards. The standing committee also granted final approval for the introduction of a part-time Ph.D. programme, a move expected to open up new avenues for higher education for individuals currently in the workforce.

The meeting underscored the university’s commitment to elevating the standard of higher education within the state and fostering an environment where students receive contemporary, skill-based training. All Deans and other members nominated by the Vice-Chancellor were in attendance, participating in discussions that shape the future academic landscape of Himachal Pradesh.

The Ability Enhancement and Development Programme is envisioned as a comprehensive module designed to bridge the gap between academic learning and industry requirements. Students will engage in activities and coursework focused on improving communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and critical thinking. The inclusion of technical skills development, particularly in areas like data science and artificial intelligence, reflects a proactive approach to preparing graduates for the evolving demands of the job market.

Himachal Pradesh University has been actively working towards the holistic development of its students since the adoption of the National Education Policy 2020. The introduction of AEDP is a significant step in this direction, building upon previous reforms aimed at modernizing the curriculum and pedagogical approaches. The university believes that such programs are essential for ensuring that graduates are not only academically sound but also possess the practical skills and adaptability required to thrive in their chosen careers.

The university administration has indicated that further details regarding the implementation of the AEDP, including specific course structures and faculty training, will be disseminated in the coming months. The overall objective is to ensure a smooth and effective rollout of the programme, maximizing its benefit to the student fraternity across Himachal Pradesh.
