India has been identified as the fifth most affected nation globally by spam and fraudulent calls, according to the latest annual report from communication platform Truecaller. The report, which analyzes data from over 500 million users worldwide, highlights a significant volume of unwanted communication impacting Indian users.

Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that while Indonesia secured the top position, followed by Chile, Vietnam, and Brazil, India’s substantial user base contributes to its high ranking in the global statistics. The platform successfully identified and blocked over 68 billion spam and scam calls across its global network in the year 2025.

The report further details that in India, the intensity of spam calls registered at 66 percent. A significant portion of these unsolicited communications had a commercial motive. Sales and telemarketing activities constituted the largest segment, accounting for 36 percent of all identified spam calls. Financial services-related calls represented another substantial category, making up 18 percent of the total.

Beyond legitimate sales pitches and service promotions, the report also flagged fraudulent activities. Scam calls comprised 12 percent of all spam activity observed in India, underscoring the persistent threat of financial fraud through unsolicited communication channels. The insights derived from Truecaller’s extensive user data provide a critical overview of the global landscape of unwanted calls and their prevalence across different regions.

The prevalence of spam calls, particularly those with commercial or fraudulent intent, poses a significant challenge for both individuals and regulatory bodies. Such communications can lead to financial losses, data breaches, and a general erosion of trust in digital communication channels. Truecaller’s annual report serves as a crucial indicator for understanding these trends and informing strategies to combat them.

While the report does not delve into the specific methods employed by spammers in India, the categorization of calls into sales, financial services, and scams provides a clear picture of the primary motivations behind these unwanted communications. The sheer volume of blocked calls suggests a constant barrage faced by users, necessitating robust filtering mechanisms and heightened user awareness.

The ranking places India among a group of nations grappling with widespread spam, highlighting the need for coordinated efforts to address this issue. As digital connectivity continues to expand, the battle against spam and fraudulent calls is likely to remain a critical concern for users and authorities alike, requiring continuous adaptation of protective measures.
