Sunetra Pawar, representing the Nationalist Congress Party (Ajit Pawar faction), has achieved a landmark victory in the Baramati Assembly by-election, securing a record-breaking margin of over 2.18 lakh votes. This decisive win in her late husband Ajit Pawar’s traditional stronghold marks a significant moment in Maharashtra’s political landscape.
Record-Breaking Mandate in Baramati
The Baramati by-election saw Sunetra Pawar poll 2,18,969 votes, surpassing her late husband Ajit Pawar’s previous victory margin of 1.65 lakh votes in 2019 and his reduced margin of just over one lakh votes in the 2024 general elections. Her win establishes a new national record for the largest victory margin in a legislative election, exceeding the previous record set in Uttar Pradesh’s Sahibabad constituency in 2022. The scale of her triumph was such that none of the 22 other candidates, mostly independents, managed to secure even a thousand votes.
Sunetra Pawar’s victory is seen as a testament to her late husband’s legacy and the enduring influence of the Pawar family in the Baramati constituency. She dedicated her win to Ajit Pawar, urging her supporters to observe restraint and avoid excessive celebrations, emphasizing that the mandate was a mark of respect for his memory.
Political Journey and Leadership Transition
Sunetra Pawar’s entry into active politics was relatively recent, with her electoral debut in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Baramati, where she lost to her sister-in-law Supriya Sule. She was subsequently elected to the Rajya Sabha in June 2024. Following the untimely demise of her husband, Ajit Pawar, in a plane crash in January 2026, Sunetra Pawar was sworn in as the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra. She also assumed the role of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief, consolidating her position within the party.
Her elevation to these key positions followed a period of political maneuvering after Ajit Pawar’s faction split from the larger NCP in 2023. The swift transition of leadership has been interpreted as an effort to assert control and maintain party unity amidst internal discussions about potential mergers between the two NCP factions.
Challenges Ahead
Despite the resounding victory, Sunetra Pawar faces the challenge of navigating coalition politics and maintaining harmony within a potentially fractured NCP. Her leadership is also being tested as differences have reportedly emerged between senior leaders and those aligned with her faction. Her recent letter to the Election Commission of India, seeking to be recognized as the sole issuer of party communications, has been seen as a move to solidify her authority.
The Pawar family has historically maintained a strong hold on the Baramati seat, with Sharad Pawar and later Ajit Pawar representing it multiple times. Sunetra Pawar’s win ensures the continuation of this legacy, albeit under new circumstances. Her focus remains on carrying forward the development agenda initiated by her husband and addressing the grassroots concerns of the constituency.
