SRINAGAR, May 06: Altaf Bukhari, president of the Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party, has articulated a vision for politics centered on the populace, explicitly rejecting dynastic governance and what he termed as misleading electoral narratives within the Union Territory.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that Bukhari, speaking to the media on Tuesday, stated that his party was established on inclusive principles, offering avenues for dedicated workers to ascend to leadership roles. He emphasized that familial ties do not dictate political positioning within the Apni Party, asserting that the organization aims to represent the interests of Jammu and Kashmir residents in New Delhi, rather than acting as an intermediary for the central government in the region.
The Apni Party chief critically assessed recent electoral practices, particularly in the 2024 elections, alleging that campaigns were influenced by deceptive narratives and emotional polarization. He voiced concerns regarding the increasing tendency for elections to be contested along religious lines, which he believes is detrimental to the democratic fabric of Jammu and Kashmir, a region historically known for transcending such divisions.
Commenting on broader national political dynamics, Bukhari drew a parallel with the electoral landscape in West Bengal. He noted that while accusations and counter-accusations are typical in political discourse, the fundamental voice of the electorate must be respected in a democratic system. He also expressed reservations about specific electoral processes, suggesting that any measures potentially leading to the disenfranchisement of communities should be actively opposed.
In discussions concerning social issues, Bukhari reiterated his party’s long-standing demand for a prohibition on alcohol in Jammu and Kashmir. He reasoned that if such measures are feasible in states like Gujarat and Bihar, they should be seriously considered for Jammu and Kashmir as well. Furthermore, he lent his support to ongoing campaigns against drug abuse, identifying substance abuse as a significant threat to societal well-being and future generations.
Addressing the prevailing security situation, Bukhari pointed out that despite the passage of time since the Pahalgam incident in April 2025, key tourist destinations such as Yusmarg and Doodhpathri continue to face access restrictions. He urged the concerned authorities to implement robust security arrangements to facilitate the full restoration of tourism and normalcy in these areas.
Bukhari also directed criticism towards parties such as the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference and the Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party, accusing them of exhibiting hypocrisy in their political strategies, particularly concerning alliances and legislative decisions. He alleged that these parties tend to misinform the public while prioritizing their own political agendas.
The leader maintained that the Apni Party’s focus will remain on governance, transparency, and the welfare of the public. He encouraged the people of Jammu and Kashmir to retain hope and actively participate in shaping the region’s future.
