The announcement of the Tamil Nadu Class 12 board examination results has been postponed, officials from the School Education Department confirmed on Wednesday, May 6, 2026. The results, originally scheduled for release on May 8, will be delayed as the state awaits the formation of a new government following recent assembly elections.

Government Formation Delays Result Announcement

Information available with The Chenab Times indicates that nearly eight lakh students are affected by this delay. The Directorate of Government Examinations stated that while the valuation of answer sheets was completed between April 6 and April 20, the formal approval from the new government is required before the results can be officially declared. This administrative step is a procedural necessity during a period of government transition.

Senior officials from the School Education Department and the Directorate of Government Examinations have confirmed that all technical preparations for publishing the results are complete. However, they emphasized the need to obtain permission from the new administration before the results can be officially released. Sources within the Education Department further added that they are awaiting the completion of administrative procedures by the new government before seeking final clearance.

Anxiety Among Students and Parents

The delay, though expected to be temporary, has reportedly caused anxiety among students who are preparing for higher education admissions and other entrance procedures that are contingent upon their Class 12 marks. The Higher Secondary public examinations were conducted across Tamil Nadu from March 2 to March 26, 2026.

While an official date for the announcement of the results has not yet been provided, officials assured that the results would be published soon after the necessary approvals are secured. Steps are reportedly being taken to expedite the remaining formalities to minimize further impact on students. The Tamil Nadu Plus-Two examinations are a crucial academic milestone, determining admissions to undergraduate courses and various professional programs.

Previously, reports indicated that the Directorate of Government Examinations (DGE), Tamil Nadu, was expected to announce the results on May 8, 2026. The answer sheet evaluation process had been completed, and results were to be declared soon after the election results. Students were advised to keep their admit cards handy to check their results on the official websites, tnresults.nic.in and dge.tn.gov.in.

The Tamil Nadu government’s stance on NEET has remained consistent, with a demand for exemption and opposition to the exam based on its perceived disadvantage to students from rural and economically weaker backgrounds. This political context, while separate from the immediate delay in results, underscores the ongoing educational policy discussions in the state.
