Himachal Pradesh’s PWD and Urban Development Minister Vikramaditya Singh has officially launched the Congress party’s campaign for the upcoming Mandi Municipal Corporation elections. Singh articulated the party’s electoral approach as one centered on a “clear vision, strong leadership, and people-oriented agenda.” He asserted that the Congress had meticulously selected candidates possessing strong public connections, a commitment to social causes, and credibility at the grassroots level.
Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that Singh directed criticism towards the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), questioning their decision to withhold tickets from several incumbent councillors, including the present Mayor and Deputy Mayor. According to Singh, this move by the BJP itself signifies “public dissatisfaction and a failure of governance” within the Mandi Municipal Corporation.
The minister stressed that the Congress’s electoral strategy would focus on “issues, development, and accountability.” He further revealed that extensive consultations had been conducted with all 14 Congress candidates to formulate a comprehensive roadmap for the future development of Mandi city. This proactive planning aims to present a clear vision to the electorate, distinguishing the Congress’s approach from that of its political opponents.
Highlighting his portfolio as Urban Development Minister, Singh announced the sanctioning of projects totaling approximately ₹180 crore for the Mandi Municipal Corporation. These projects are slated to receive support from both the state and central governments, underscoring a coordinated effort towards urban upliftment. The minister further disclosed that during a recent high-level meeting in New Delhi with Union Urban Development authorities, Himachal Pradesh secured a significant allocation of nearly ₹1,200 crore under the Urban Challenge Fund. This fund is dedicated to enhancing urban infrastructure across the state.
Among the key development projects identified for Mandi city are the comprehensive revitalization of Indra Market, which will include substantial upgrades to its sewerage and drainage systems. Additionally, plans are in motion for the beautification and riverfront development along the historic Panchvaktra Temple area. The Mandi Bus Stand is also slated for modernisation and green redevelopment, to be executed under a public-private partnership (PPP) model, aiming to create a more efficient and environmentally conscious transportation hub.
In a significant move to promote youth engagement and address societal concerns, the minister announced the proposed creation of a world-class indoor sports complex. This facility is intended to foster greater youth participation in sports and serve as a measure to counter the rising incidence of drug abuse among young people. The development of such facilities is seen as crucial for the holistic growth and well-being of the city’s younger population, providing constructive avenues for their energy and talent.
The election campaign launch in Mandi underscores the political landscape of the region, with the Congress party aiming to leverage developmental initiatives and local connect to secure a victory. The upcoming civic polls are expected to be closely contested, with both major political fronts presenting their manifestos and development agendas to the voters of Mandi Municipal Corporation.
