In a significant development for Mumbai’s suburban rail network, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has granted in-principle approval for the construction of a new railway station situated between Thane and Mulund on the Central Railway main line. The announcement was made on Friday, marking a crucial step towards enhancing commuter convenience and easing congestion in the bustling Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

Project Receives Key Nod from Union Railway Ministry

The approval signifies a major advancement for a project that has been in discussion for several years. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed his gratitude towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for the in-principle sanction. He stated that the coordination between the Central and State governments would lead to a more efficient and dynamic transportation system within the MMR.

According to details received by The Chenab Times, the new station is planned to be developed on approximately 14.83 acres of land historically belonging to the Thane Mental Hospital, located on the western side between Thane and Mulund. The project, initially conceptualised around 2019, aims to alleviate the heavy passenger footfall currently experienced at both the Thane and Mulund railway stations.

Enhancing Connectivity and Easing Commuter Burden

The proposed station is expected to provide much-needed relief to thousands of daily commuters. It is anticipated to improve suburban rail connectivity and significantly reduce the strain on one of Mumbai’s busiest railway corridors. Areas such as Ghodbunder Road, Pokhran Road, and Wagle Estate, which currently face challenges in accessing the existing railway network, are expected to benefit immensely from the new station’s proximity.

The project has seen multiple phases of planning and approval since its inception. Earlier projections indicated that the new station could reduce passenger load at Thane station by approximately 31% and at Mulund station by around 24%. The construction is intended to be divided into two components: the railway operating area, to be handled by Central Railways and funded by Thane Smart City Limited, and the development of the circulating area, which will be undertaken by Thane Smart City Limited.

Background and Future Outlook

The demand for a new station in this corridor has been a long-standing one, pushed by local political leaders seeking to improve commuter facilities. The project has faced several delays in the past due to cost escalations, with initial estimates from 2016 ballooning significantly. Reports suggest that the estimated cost of the project has risen from an initial Rs 127 crore to over Rs 250 crore, a factor that had threatened to indefinitely postpone its execution.

The Shiv Sena had actively advocated for the project’s progression, with party MPs meeting the railway minister to urge the railways to take over the project execution, citing financial constraints faced by the municipal corporation. The agreement outlines that the railways will construct the station and its allied services, while the Thane corporation will be responsible for ensuring connectivity modes and external infrastructure, such as parking facilities.

The new station is planned to feature multiple platforms to accommodate suburban trains. This development is a part of broader efforts to enhance the efficiency and capacity of the Mumbai Suburban Rail Network, aiming to distribute passenger load more effectively and reduce travel times for a significant number of commuters in the region.
