CUDDALORE: In a significant enforcement action, authorities in Cuddalore district, Tamil Nadu, have destroyed over five tonnes of banned tobacco products. The destruction, which took place on Sunday, May 10, 2026, followed a court order and involved the disposal of 5,714.5 kg of contraband seized in various cases across the district. This operation underscores the ongoing efforts to combat the sale and consumption of illegal tobacco items.
The seized products, primarily comprising gutkha and other forms of banned smokeless tobacco, were accumulated from 23 cases registered at different police stations within Cuddalore district. The disposal was carried out under the strict supervision of the Superintendent of Police, S. Jeyakumar, ensuring adherence to legal and environmental regulations. Officials from the Food Safety Department, the municipal sanitation wing, the Deputy Superintendent of Police, and personnel from the concerned police stations were present during the operation, ensuring transparency and accountability.
The destruction of such a large quantity of banned tobacco products highlights the persistent challenge posed by the illicit trade in these items. These products are banned by the State government due to their severe health implications, particularly their link to oral cancers and other diseases. The safe and systematic disposal of seized contraband is a crucial step in preventing them from re-entering the market and further safeguarding public health.
This action is part of a broader crackdown on tobacco products in Tamil Nadu. The state government has been actively enforcing bans on the manufacture, storage, transport, distribution, and sale of oral tobacco products, including gutkha and pan masala, under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. Recent reports indicate a stepped-up enforcement campaign, with extensive inspections of shops and vehicles, substantial seizures of banned tobacco, and the imposition of significant fines on violators. The police have also registered numerous cases and confiscated large quantities of these prohibited items.
In recent months, various districts in Tamil Nadu have reported significant seizures of banned tobacco products. In one instance, over 5,300 kg of gutkha was destroyed in Cuddalore following court orders. Earlier, in Bhuvanagiri, also in Cuddalore district, approximately 500 kg of banned tobacco products worth ₹13 lakh were seized, leading to the arrest of two individuals. These incidents reflect a concerted effort by law enforcement agencies to disrupt the supply chain and curb the availability of these harmful substances.
The Tamil Nadu government has reiterated its commitment to protecting public health, with a particular focus on safeguarding children and young adults from the perils of tobacco. The ongoing enforcement drives, coupled with the destruction of seized contraband, aim to create a tobacco-free environment across the state. The successful execution of this large-scale destruction operation in Cuddalore serves as a strong message to manufacturers, distributors, and sellers of banned tobacco products that such activities will not be tolerated.
