JAMMU: In a significant move under its intensified anti-drug campaign, the Jammu and Kashmir administration, in coordination with the police, has demolished three residential houses belonging to individuals accused of drug peddling in the Kathua district. The operation targeted properties believed to be illegally constructed on government land in the Korepunnu area of Rajbagh.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the action was taken against the properties of Liaqat Ali, also known as ‘Liaqatu’, and his brothers Gaggu Din and Sham Din, all residents of Korepunnu in Tehsil Marheen of Kathua district. These individuals are reportedly involved in multiple criminal cases related to drug trafficking and other illicit activities, with at least 16 First Information Reports (FIRs) registered against them.
Officials overseeing the demolition stated that the estimated value of the demolished structures exceeds one crore rupees. The operation underscores the administration’s unwavering resolve to combat the pervasive drug menace and to impose stringent measures against those engaged in narcotics-related crimes. Authorities aim to dismantle the infrastructure and assets of drug traffickers, sending a strong deterrent message to prevent further involvement in such activities.
The demolition drive is part of a broader strategy by the Jammu and Kashmir administration to cleanse the region of drug abuse and illegal trade. This includes not only apprehending individuals involved in drug peddling but also seizing and disposing of their ill-gotten assets, which are often accumulated through criminal enterprises. The focus on illegally constructed properties also addresses the issue of encroachment on state land, further consolidating the administration’s efforts to maintain law and order and protect public assets.
The district administration of Kathua has been actively involved in implementing the anti-drug campaign, with regular enforcement actions being carried out. The police department has played a crucial role in identifying the targets, gathering intelligence, and executing the demolitions in a coordinated manner. The process involved legal procedures to ensure that due process was followed before the demolition of the properties, adhering to relevant land laws and penal codes.
This action is expected to have a significant impact on the drug trade networks operating in the region. By targeting the residences and assets of alleged peddlers, the authorities aim to disrupt their financial capabilities and operational bases. The administration has reiterated its commitment to a zero-tolerance policy towards drug trafficking and has urged citizens to cooperate with law enforcement agencies by reporting any suspicious activities or individuals involved in the drug trade.
The campaign is not only focused on punitive measures but also includes rehabilitation and awareness programs to address the root causes of drug addiction and to support individuals seeking to overcome substance abuse. However, the recent demolition of properties marks a decisive step in the enforcement aspect of the anti-drug strategy, highlighting the seriousness with which the administration is treating the issue of drug peddling in Jammu and Kashmir.
