CHANDIGARH: The Chairman of the Punjab State Scheduled Castes Commission, Jasvir Singh Garhi, conducted an inspection of the New District Jail in Nabha on Monday, assessing the facilities provided to inmates and issuing directives aimed at safeguarding their fundamental rights and dignity.
The Chenab Times has learned that the visit involved a thorough review of various sections within the jail complex. Chairman Garhi personally interacted with prisoners to gauge their living conditions and attentively listened to their grievances and concerns. A detailed assessment of essential services, including food arrangements, healthcare provisions, sanitation standards, and other welfare measures, was also carried out.
Interacting with the media on the sidelines of the inspection, Chairman Garhi reiterated the Punjab government’s commitment, under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, to fostering an environment conducive to the reform and rehabilitation of individuals within correctional facilities. He outlined his plan to visit all jails across the state to meticulously review the facilities and welfare initiatives being extended to inmates, with the Nabha jail serving as the commencement point for this statewide endeavor.
During the inspection, Chairman Garhi issued specific instructions to the jail authorities, underscoring the imperative to ensure that all inmates receive their stipulated facilities and legal rights in strict adherence to the provisions outlined in the jail manual. He emphatically stated that any form of discrimination against prisoners would not be countenanced and stressed the paramount importance of protecting the dignity and rights of every individual incarcerated within the facility.
Jail Superintendent Inderjit Singh Kahlon provided Chairman Garhi with a comprehensive overview of the jail’s operational mechanisms and highlighted the various reformative and welfare activities currently being implemented for the benefit of the inmates. Expressing a degree of satisfaction with the ongoing efforts, Chairman Garhi remarked that individuals who have erred should continue to be afforded their rightful entitlements within the legal framework to facilitate their personal reformation and reintegration into society.
The visit was attended by several other officials, including Deputy Jail Superintendent Harpreet Singh Rai, District Social Justice and Empowerment Officer Jasvir Kaur, Tehsil Welfare Officer Inayat Walia, and Tehsildar Baljit Singh, who were present to witness the proceedings and lend support to the commission’s oversight efforts.
