KOLKATA: In its inaugural cabinet meeting, the West Bengal government has approved the transfer of land to the Border Security Force (BSF) for the construction of a fence along the international border with Bangladesh. The decision, announced by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, signifies a move towards strengthening border security in the state.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the process for land transfer is set to commence immediately and is expected to be completed within a 45-day timeframe. This initiative aims to enhance the physical barrier along the vulnerable stretches of the India-Bangladesh border, a critical area for national security.
The Chief Minister also disclosed that the cabinet has given its assent to the implementation of the Ayushman Bharat health scheme, a flagship initiative of the Union government, along with several other central government welfare programs. This move is expected to extend vital health coverage to the citizens of West Bengal.
In a further development addressing public welfare and administrative efficiency, the cabinet approved a proposal to extend the age limit for applicants seeking school jobs by five years. This decision aligns with promises made during recent election campaigns, addressing concerns about employment opportunities for eligible candidates.
The West Bengal cabinet has also empowered the Chief Secretary to initiate training programs for officers under national and state cadres, drawing from the training modules provided by the central government. This is intended to foster administrative synergy and professional development within the state’s bureaucracy.
Furthermore, the cabinet took a significant step by deciding to implement the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the new criminal law, within the state. Chief Minister Adhikari stated that the previous administration had allegedly failed to implement the BNS in violation of constitutional provisions.
Additionally, the cabinet has mandated the immediate implementation of the Census circular issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs in June 2025. The Chief Minister noted that the previous government had overlooked this directive. The timely execution of the census is crucial for policy formulation and resource allocation.
