The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has successfully extradited a fugitive, Prabhdeep Singh, from Azerbaijan to India. Singh is a key figure wanted in connection with a narcotics racket case registered by the Delhi Police.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that Singh was apprehended and subsequently extradited following efforts by the CBI. The fugitive is implicated in a case investigated by the special cell of Delhi Police, which pertains to the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1958. A significant quantity of narcotics was recovered, and several individuals believed to be co-accused have been arrested in connection with the ongoing investigation.
Sources within the CBI have indicated that Prabhdeep Singh is considered the primary organiser behind the alleged narcotics network. The agency had initiated the process for his extradition after a Red Notice was issued against him through Interpol channels, at the request of the Delhi Police.
Following intelligence gathering that pinpointed Singh’s location, authorities in Azerbaijan arrested him. Subsequently, India formally submitted an extradition request to the Azerbaijani government. After completing the necessary legal procedures, Singh was extradited to India.
A dedicated three-member escort team from the Delhi Police travelled to Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, to facilitate Singh’s return to India. The team, accompanying Singh, arrived in Delhi today, marking the culmination of the extradition process. The case involves allegations of large-scale drug trafficking, and Singh’s extradition is seen as a significant step in dismantling the network.
The NDPS Act, 1958, under which the case is registered, provides stringent measures for the control and regulation of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances in India. It outlines penalties for various offences, including production, possession, sale, and trafficking of such substances. The Act aims to curb drug abuse and illicit trade, which pose a significant threat to public health and national security.
The successful extradition highlights the international cooperation between India and Azerbaijan in combating transnational crime. The Interpol Red Notice is a critical tool used by law enforcement agencies worldwide to apprehend and extradite wanted individuals across borders. Its issuance signifies that a person is wanted by a member country and that Interpol asks police, immigration, and other relevant authorities worldwide to find and provisionally arrest the person pending extradition.
The Delhi Police’s special cell has been actively investigating the narcotics racket, with Singh’s alleged role as the main organiser making his apprehension a priority. The recovery of substantial quantities of narcotics indicates the scale of the operation that law enforcement agencies are working to dismantle. Further investigation is expected to reveal more details about the extent of the network and the individuals involved.
The extradition process is often complex, involving mutual legal assistance treaties and diplomatic negotiations between countries. The swift action by the CBI and the cooperation from Azerbaijani authorities underscore the commitment of both nations to address international drug trafficking. The return of Prabhdeep Singh is expected to aid the ongoing investigation, potentially leading to further arrests and seizures.
The CBI, as India’s central law enforcement agency, plays a crucial role in investigating serious crimes, including those with international ramifications. Its involvement in securing Singh’s extradition demonstrates its capacity to coordinate with foreign agencies and Interpol to bring fugitives to justice. The agency’s efforts are vital in upholding the rule of law and ensuring that individuals involved in criminal activities are held accountable, regardless of their location.
