In a testament to dedication and perseverance, Gurpreet Singh, an 18-year-old student from Jalandhar, has achieved the second highest score in the district in the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) Class 12 examinations. His remarkable achievement comes amidst challenging circumstances, as he works as an electrician to supplement his family’s income.
Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that Gurpreet Singh secured an impressive 486 out of 500 marks, translating to 97.20 percent. His father works as a labourer and his mother is a homemaker. Facing limited financial resources, Gurpreet began working as an electrician approximately three years ago to contribute to the household’s financial stability. He reportedly earns around Rs 12,000 per month, which assists in covering his personal expenses and contributing to family needs.
Gurpreet is a student at the School of Eminence in Kartarpur. His subject-wise scores highlight his strong performance across various disciplines. He achieved 90 marks in Elements of Electrical Technology, 89 in Materials and Workshop Practice, and 87 in Electrical Domestic Appliances. He further excelled in language and general subjects, scoring 98 in General Punjabi and 92 in General English.
The young achiever described a demanding routine that balanced his academic pursuits with his vocational work. He would attend school during regular hours and then dedicate his afternoons and evenings to his job as an electrician. Often returning home late at night, sometimes as late as 9 pm or even midnight depending on the workload, Gurpreet would still find time and energy to study. He emphasized understanding concepts rather than rote memorization, stating that he tried to dedicate at least one or two hours to his studies whenever he was not excessively fatigued.
Singh also noted that he maintained focus during his school hours to maximize the benefit of classroom learning. He is currently undergoing vocational training in electrical work, a pursuit he believes complements his academic studies by providing practical skills alongside theoretical knowledge. This combination of learning and hands-on experience appears to have been instrumental in his success.
Looking towards the future, Gurpreet Singh’s immediate objective is to complete a diploma in electrical studies. This qualification is a stepping stone towards achieving financial stability, a goal he openly shares. Beyond his immediate academic and vocational aspirations, he harbours ambitions of preparing for government job examinations to secure a long-term, stable career.
Gurpreet articulated his long-term perspective on education, stating, “I was always aware that education is the only way forward. Even while working long hours, I never let myself drift away from studies because I knew that only consistent effort and learning could change my circumstances.” His statement underscores a profound understanding of the transformative power of education, especially in the context of overcoming socio-economic barriers. His journey from supporting his family through manual labour to achieving academic excellence serves as an inspiration, highlighting the potential that exists within individuals who are driven by ambition and a commitment to self-improvement, regardless of their background.
