Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu has called upon universities and higher educational institutions in the national capital to assume a pivotal role in addressing the city’s escalating urban and social challenges. He emphasized that campuses should evolve into hubs for innovation, awareness, and behavioural transformation.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that during an interactive agenda-setting meeting with Vice Chancellors and Directors of universities and institutions under the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (GNCTD), Mr. Sandhu underscored the imperative for robust collaboration among academia, industry, government, and society. This synergy, he stated, is crucial for equipping students with essential skills, enhancing their employability, and fostering entrepreneurship.
Officials from the Higher Education Department and various universities reported that the Lieutenant Governor highlighted the responsibility of educational institutions to actively contribute to resolving issues confronting Delhi. These include pressing concerns such as environmental pollution, traffic congestion, water scarcity, effective waste management, and public health.
In his capacity as the Chancellor of these universities and institutions, Mr. Sandhu also advocated for heightened awareness among students concerning sustainable living practices and conservation measures. He specifically advised students to reduce their reliance on private vehicles and to embrace public transportation and carpooling initiatives. These actions, he noted, would contribute significantly to conserving fossil fuels and mitigating pollution levels.
The Lieutenant Governor pointed out that the approximately three lakh students enrolled in these institutions possess the potential to act as catalysts for change. By spreading awareness not only within their immediate families but also among their peers and broader social networks, they can drive positive societal shifts.
Mr. Sandhu further stressed the importance of engaging students in critical civic and social matters. This includes initiatives related to women’s safety, traffic decongestion, implementing Green Delhi campaigns, promoting urban sustainability, enhancing water conservation efforts, facilitating groundwater recharge, and improving waste management strategies.
He articulated that universities and institutions are ideally positioned to become the primary drivers of the newly conceptualized ‘Delhi Behavioural Change Mission’. This mission aims to foster a more responsible and engaged citizenry.
During the course of the meeting, a spectrum of pressing issues pertinent to Delhi’s development and governance was deliberated upon. Universities were actively encouraged to undertake focused research projects that are solution-oriented, aiming to provide practical answers to the city’s multifaceted problems.
Regarding air quality and environmental concerns, the Lieutenant Governor drew attention to the urgent necessity for collaborative research. This research should delve into the sources of pollution, explore effective mitigation technologies, promote green urban planning strategies, and assess the public health implications of persistently poor air quality. He acknowledged that Delhi continues to be recognized among the world’s most polluted urban centers.
Discussions also centered on urban water supply and sanitation infrastructure. Key areas of focus included ensuring equitable water distribution, addressing the critical issue of groundwater depletion, undertaking the rejuvenation of the Yamuna riverfront, and implementing comprehensive solid and liquid waste management systems to cater to the needs of the capital’s rapidly expanding population.
Traffic management and urban mobility were identified as another significant area of concern. Institutions were encouraged to conduct data-driven research aimed at finding solutions for traffic decongestion, improving last-mile connectivity, promoting the adoption of electric vehicles, and developing intelligent transport systems.
The Lieutenant Governor also emphasized the significance of research and outreach programs dedicated to mental health and well-being. This focus is particularly relevant given the observed increase in stress levels, addiction, and other mental health concerns among the urban youth population.
Further subjects that were discussed during the comprehensive meeting encompassed urban poverty, the dynamics of the informal economy, enhancing disaster preparedness measures, improving flood resilience, and strengthening post-COVID public health surveillance mechanisms across the city.
