Uttar Pradesh has been struck by a devastating combination of dust storms, heavy rains, and lightning, resulting in the deaths of at least 111 people and leaving scores injured. The unseasonal weather, which battered several districts across the state, also caused extensive damage to property, livestock, and crops.

The Relief Commissioner’s office reported that the severe weather events on Wednesday led to 111 reported deaths across 26 districts. In addition to the fatalities, 72 individuals sustained injuries, 170 livestock were lost, and 227 houses were damaged. The extent of the destruction necessitated immediate relief and rescue operations, with emergency teams, police, and local administrators deployed to affected areas to clear debris and assist residents.

Government Response and Relief Measures

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath promptly took cognizance of the loss of lives and damage caused by the extreme weather. He directed officials to ensure that relief reaches affected families within 24 hours and instructed district authorities to assess the loss of human lives, livestock, and property, with compensation to be disbursed without delay. The Chief Minister’s Office emphasized that senior district officials must personally interact with affected families, warning that negligence would not be tolerated. The Relief Commissioner’s office is continuously monitoring the situation through direct coordination with district officials, ensuring that necessary funds are made available to the affected districts.

The state government has also initiated surveys to assess the damage to crops, livestock, and homes. Orders have been issued for officials to conduct field inspections, and compensation measures have been announced, with financial relief being disbursed to affected individuals. The Chief Minister has further instructed that compensation disbursal, rescue operations, and related work be updated on social media, and has asked all District Magistrates to prioritize relief work.

Impact Across Districts

Districts such as Bhadohi, Prayagraj, Fatehpur, Budaun, Chandauli, and Sonbhadra were among the worst affected. Bhadohi recorded a significant number of deaths, with reports indicating 16 fatalities in some accounts. Prayagraj also suffered substantial losses, with one report citing 17 deaths in the district. The sudden and intense weather events caused widespread destruction, including uprooted trees, collapsing walls, and damaged infrastructure, which complicated rescue and relief efforts. In some areas, mobile communication networks were disrupted due to damage to electricity poles and infrastructure.

Eyewitness accounts described scenes of panic as strong winds swept through neighborhoods, with tin roofs being torn off and trees falling, leading to further casualties. The unexpected fury of the storm disrupted normal life, with many residents seeking shelter as the weather turned severe. The unseasonal rain and thunderstorms have been attributed to weather patterns affecting the region.
