Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh – The Municipal Corporation elections in Dharamshala commenced on Sunday with a steady voter turnout, recording approximately 12.2 percent by 9 am, two hours after polling began at 7 am. The electoral process is being conducted under stringent security measures, with reports indicating peaceful conditions across all designated polling stations within the town.
Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that out of a total electorate of 36,800 voters spread across 17 wards, 4,508 individuals had exercised their right to vote by the 9 am mark. Long queues were observed at numerous polling booths early in the morning, with a notable presence of women and elderly voters who arrived promptly to cast their ballots, seeking to avoid the escalating daytime temperatures.
Election officials confirmed that the voting process was proceeding without significant hitches and that all Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) deployed at the polling stations were functioning optimally. The Dharamshala Municipal Corporation elections have evolved into a closely watched political contest, primarily featuring the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Indian National Congress. Both major political outfits have intensified their campaign efforts to garner support across all the wards under the civic body’s jurisdiction.
The Congress party is placing its confidence in the state government’s ongoing development initiatives and its localized outreach strategies. Conversely, the BJP has centered its campaign narrative on allegations concerning civic mismanagement and perceived corruption within the Municipal Corporation. The electoral landscape has been further complicated by the participation of rebel candidates and independent contenders in a considerable number of wards, introducing a triangular dynamic to the contests in many areas. Political analysts suggest that these rebel candidates, potentially drawing support from traditional vote banks of the major parties, could play a pivotal role in determining the outcomes in closely fought wards.
The district administration has undertaken comprehensive security arrangements, deploying a sufficient number of police personnel, particularly to polling stations identified as sensitive, to ensure the integrity and fairness of the electoral process. The polling is scheduled to continue until 3 pm on Sunday. The counting of votes, which will determine the composition of the new Municipal Corporation, is slated to take place on May 31.
