ANANTNAG, May 17: Hundreds of residents from multiple villages in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district participated in the centuries-old Panzath festival on Sunday, a community gathering dedicated to the collective cleaning of freshwater springs crucial for drinking water and agricultural irrigation.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the annual festival, traditionally associated with communal fish-catching, was observed at the historic Panzath spring area near Qazigund. Participants, equipped with traditional baskets and nets, entered the streams and spring channels.
Locals emphasized that the primary objective of the event extends beyond fishing; it is fundamentally about the preservation and restoration of the natural spring waters that serve nearby villages through both piped water systems and irrigation networks. Participants manually cleared weeds, mud deposits, waste materials, and blockages to enhance water flow and maintain the health of these vital water sources.
This tradition, reported to have continued for nearly 500 years, is described by participants as a community-driven environmental conservation practice that has been passed down through generations. The Panzath area, known for its numerous freshwater springs, derives its name from a local interpretation signifying “500 springs.” These water bodies are recognized as a significant natural resource for the surrounding villages in the Qazigund belt.
The festival saw participation from individuals across all age groups, including elders and youth, underscoring its importance as a social and cultural event in the region. The annual cleaning exercise plays a critical role in ensuring water quality prior to the peak agricultural season, particularly when the demand for irrigation in paddy fields and orchards intensifies.
Historically, the Panzath festival has attracted participants from several villages, cementing its status as one of Kashmir’s oldest community-based environmental traditions. The collective effort highlights a deep-rooted commitment to natural resource management and community cooperation.
