BEIJING, May 17: A tragic accident in southern China has resulted in one fatality and left nine individuals missing after a pickup truck carrying workers fell from a bridge on Saturday. The vehicle was transporting labourers to a sweet potato farm in the Guangxi region.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that a total of 15 people were on board the truck when it plunged into a river while crossing a low-water bridge in Huanjiang Maonan Autonomous County. Authorities confirmed that five individuals were rescued from the incident.

Search and rescue operations commenced on Sunday, with a significant deployment of over 700 personnel. These rescuers are equipped with advanced technology, including underwater sonar devices, dinghies, and drones, to locate the missing persons and the submerged vehicle. The focus of the ongoing efforts remains on finding the nine individuals who are still unaccounted for.

The incident occurred amid challenging weather conditions, with heavy rainfall in the area contributing to torrents and increasing the risk of landslides. State media reported that these environmental factors have complicated the rescue operations, making the search more arduous for the teams involved.

The Guangxi region, located in southwest China, is known for its agricultural activities, including the cultivation of sweet potatoes. The workers were reportedly being transported to a farm when the accident took place. Details regarding the exact cause of the truck falling off the bridge are still under investigation by local authorities.

The low-water bridge, a structure often submerged or partially covered during periods of high water flow, may have presented a hazard given the prevailing weather conditions. The investigation will likely examine factors such as the condition of the bridge, the vehicle’s load capacity, and the driving circumstances leading up to the plunge.

Rescue agencies are working diligently to provide updates as the search continues. The priority remains the safe recovery of those missing and determining the circumstances surrounding this devastating accident.
